Improved on the complexity of the Civilization model, while effectively translating the architect experience to 3D.

The signature of Civ IV's gameplay is the inclusion of culture and religion, which is represented by a continuously expanding colored border around each city. If your ally sets up a city on the outskirts of one of your cultured cities, Their new city will be steamrolled 40 years later or so as the demographic of their small city admits they are actually members of your nation.

Civ IV is a competition of percentages. The player is making tons of long term investments and fostering an economy. The macroscopic representation of these percentages are perfect; the coins, hammers, and battle animations strike a nice medium between cartoony and mathematic.

Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword has rendered Civ IV obsolete by improving further on it. Just change the menu display of Beyond the Sword to the Civ IV African planet song animation in the options and nothing is lost.
