I don't even particularly like fighting games, and I think it may be because of that reason (and not despite it) that I absolutely fell in love with this collection.
Samurai Shodown is a series I never knew I needed. I've always been fighting game adjacent, seeking a series that emphasizes slow pacing and strategy over inputs and reaction speeds. For 30 years it's been out there and I just haven't played it.
Samurai Shodown is elegant, refined, and a better introduction to the genre than anything involving fights on the streets, and it's got top notch presentation to boot.
This is a collection of old fighting games from some old console. It reminded me of Street Fighter 2 with its cartoony graphics and weird characters (that big red guy, wtf). It all works and stuff, but i don't know who any of these people are and i had no idea what i was doing playing as the guy who looks kinda like SSJ4 Goku.
If you're not nostalgic about this series nor know any Japanese other than ippon/yuko/koka this may not be for you.
Whoa! That’s a lot of Samurai Shodown, to be perfectly honest. You might be wondering about some of the later additions in this list, including what, exactly a “PERFECT” version of Samurai Shodown V might entail. A game that went unreleased for 15 years finally saw the light of day. It's fun.
We got two copies of Samurai Shodown NeoGeo Collection for some reason. A colleague wrote the review so I took the change to talk about my favorite character in the series.

Yes. I love Nakoruru. This article is in the style of my 'in depth' articles, so I talk about female characters in fighting game, the ainu people of Japan and why the 'guardian of nature' aspect of her character is important.
Samurai Shodown NeoGeo Collection (which is free on Epic Games Store right now, go get it!) includes Samurai Shodown V Perfect, a game that was finished, but never got to the market and was thought long lost.
Wanna read about how this was recovered and why it was canceled in the first place? I wrote about it in GamerFocus.
If you can't read spanish, at least read the original twitter thread about it by Brandon Sheffield, head of Necrosoft Games. It's a very good story!
This is free on the Epic store this week:

Next week we get Pathway and The Escapists 2.
This is free at the Epic Store. Just in time to me starting to enjoy fighting games thanks to SNK Gal's Fighter.
