I love the game. For now I consider it the most mature game in the series but at the same time it's the one that had the most comedic and childish moments. It's evident that this game is aimed at a more adult audience, which I don't mind at all. It surprises me how after eleven installments, the developers still manage to keep us hooked!
To put it succinctly this is the best trails game yet (even better than cold steel II). Daybreak still indulges in some of the typical nihon-falcom JRPG cheesiness (villains fleeing to fight another day x1000, fakeout deaths, monologue-ing, et. al) but seems to find a better balance between the expected JRPG tropes and a ever slightly more grounded story tackling more adult themes and content. Make no mistake, this isn't the witcher 3, but in comparison to the previous cold steel series the overt violence, actual character death, and presence of more adult content (sex work, drugs, etc.) may come as a surprise.
The game doesn't lose any of the series patented wholesomeness and charm in spite of the inclusion of more adult themes- I'd argue the classic cold steel vibes are as strong as ever in daybreak because of the lower lows and darker moments.
A few general notes
The things you expect from a trails game are exactly as you'd imagine; the art style is solid despite the graphics being a generation (or two) behind, the music is top notch, the writing is great as always (reluctant shoutout to NIS america) and the world building is as exhaustive …

The things you expect from a trails game are exactly as you'd imagine; the art style is solid despite the graphics being a generation (or two) behind, the music is top notch, the writing is great as always (reluctant shoutout to NIS america) and the world building is as exhaustive and complex as any series out there. No surprises; the series strengths are stronger than ever, and its weaknesses (inconsistent and incomplete voice acting, comic book style 'tune in next time' unresolved major plot threads, graphical quality, etc.) while better than previous titles in the series, are still present.
The action combat system is hit or miss, but it does seem to solve the tediousness of 'random world encounters' while not compromising the series trademark brilliant turn based combat. I full cleared every area of all enemies and despite ~80+ hr playtime I still didn't get burnt out on dodge-hit-dodge-hit as the action combat sections were all brief, mostly optional and punctuated with great tactical turn based fights.
The turn based combat is incredible as expected, with good build options, variety and customization. I felt like the major boss battles were a little too S-BREAK focused at times, but that could be a consequence of my play style and how I built my party, and the fights themselves were still satisfying and challenging.
Van is the best protagonist yet. No offense to Estelle and Lloyd (and Rean, I guess, if anyone would even consider him) but Van is the soul of this game in spite of Daybreak letting its ancillary party members shine often.
The Trails series is a motley collection of brilliant music and writing, classic JRPG cheese, a ps3 graphics engine and an overall story that has grown wildly out of scope and when you combine all these elements you get one of the best JRPG series out there in spite of its consistent flaws.
This is the strongest debut a new entry in this franchise has ever had. The characters are solid and well-developed, and the pacing is spot-on - each chapter serves a clear purpose and takes exactly the time it needs to tell its part of the story, not a minute more or less.
It’s impressive how the creators committed to building an entirely new region brimming with life, populated by characters who have genuine purpose and distinct backgrounds. They achieved this while maintaining rich interactions between the cast and keeping the plot consistently engaging.
I also appreciate that it takes a bold step forward - not only by tackling more mature themes, but by handling them with a greater level of nuance and maturity.
Last comment: I never thought I’d say this about a Trails game, but I was genuinely surprised by how it portrayed its LGBTIQ+ characters. In the past, the series had a few one-note characters whose sexuality was often played for laughs. This time, however, it featured several major and minor characters whose sexuality was acknowledged and explored with more sincerity and depth.
started playing this series fairly recently and played through it pretty much one after the other. Trails of Cold Steel was getting rather boring, 5 games was TOO many imo, arcs should be 3 games at most so finally starting off fresh with a new area/team was SUCH a breath of fresh air I hope the calvard arc or at least the van arc is going to be 2 or 3 games. I also HATED the "curse" part of the cold steel story it really felt like an excuse to sweep all the terrible stuff the bad guys did under the rug and belittles the stuff NPCs/Good guys went through. In my head canon "main bad guy" had just lost it and the curse wasnt real. (Theres enough drugs, illusions and mind control in this series to hand way it")
That aside ill say Daybreak improved on pretty much everything in regards to mechanics from the previous game but two things bothered me.
The first is just a fear, with the introduction of an option to play this game like an action rpg (or a but of both) I will say it was nice to just smash through enemies i …

The first is just a fear, with the introduction of an option to play this game like an action rpg (or a but of both) I will say it was nice to just smash through enemies i out leveled and having it so the battle ends immediatly allowing you to walk or run whilst the exp/loot stuff is showing made it feel alot smoother/faster even though it only shaved off like a second or two BUT im concerned that future games will push the ARPG aspect even more and id hate to lose amazing turn based series. I just dont have the reflexes and eye sight to play ARPGs.
Second was a REALLY weird decision in that the turn order doesn't show up on the UI anymore, requiring you open up "more info" its was such a PITA especially since you can only access that more info button when it your turn. Its litterally just adds the order number to each characters icon, it saves such an ifintantely small amount of spoace for a REALLLY important piece of information. SUCH a weird choice, hopefully this in future games.
Oh and it was nice that enemy identification is automatic now, you just have to beat the enemy to get it, using a identify item was just busy work so this definately contributes to combat feeling smooth and helps with not screwing yourself cause you forgot to identify one single boss like 4 hours ago. Actually being open with information is a HUGE pplus for daybreak the map idicates what NPCs you havent talked to (gold to indicate new dialog, grey to indicate no new dialog) it made getting all the extra little scenes and side quests so much easier.
Overall REALLY good start to a new arc and looking forward to Daybreak 2 coming out soon
Edit: Van is the first protag that it actually makes sense that you freely work with "bad/grey" people. They handle him really well contendor for fav protag assuming they don't ruin him somehow lol (for the record the SSS is my fav crew so far)

I have been playing The legend of heroes : trails series since the 1st installments and its instantly hooked me with its rich flavor ! So many cast, so many places , so many lores.
After waiting for really long time, finally daybreak hit the PC ! oh boi do i enjoy playing with new protagonist. His bit different then rean but not in a bad way. he is lawless but still yandere lol
And the nostalgia seeing many previous casts growing up T-T
Rene... Sylpid...
New casts not bad at all , they all fun with own personalities ! Cant wait for daybreak 2 !
{ Story and Direction }
Been wandering what they want to cook but they went for new directions but tied to previous installments. and what a good suprised seeing all previous enemies mostly work tgt to beat a mafia . yesterday enemies can be tmr friends !
Story nothing blown out of water, i still think the sky series has the best directions , but i still dig it. and something noticble is the woke writing (prob fans tranlation to project themself) man like man, man play dress, racism, anti immigrant bla bla …

{ Companions Personality and Interaction)
Very good, got character developments and yada yada.
It just i doubt some school girls now much combat can triumph over enemies several times stronger . but whatever.
also what the hell with this agender and g*y shit in trails game ? come on.
{ Graphics and Arts )
beautiful as always
{ Gameplay )
introduced an additional combat system which literally pointless. coz it takes to much time rather then just go turn based and hit them with s craft lol. and the fight become tedious halfway u will just ignore enemies anyway. the rest same as previous .
{ Exploration and travel }
Not open world. couple of cities to explore. but tons of side quests its so tedious to do most of them..... its optional but u will miss sp and some side characters stories.....
{ Voice Acting }
Everyone good
{ Music and Soundtrack }
Nothing worth of note
{ Audience }
gaymers
{ Game Time }

This game has honestly been such a breath of fresh air. I didn’t even realize how burned out I was on the Cold Steel crew until this started and—thankfully—most of the cast is brand new, with their own backgrounds to discover. The tone shift helps a lot too, and the chapters just feel way better structured. Just finished Chapter 3 and I’m really excited to keep going!
80 hour completion. What a game - that said, I don't have any desire at the moment to play Pt2 (I own it) due to the game burning me out late game with its lack of commitment to the final boss. Its annoying that 1 single chapter (the finale) , took over an excess of 2.5x the length of a normal chapter. The game just to me didn't want to commit to 'ending' in the sense that there's a baddie, we beat em, and boom credits. Is it too much to ask for a simple game? Its a phenomenal story and given Trail's record, there's plenty of time to tell a story. No need to rush things. Sadly, I hear the 2nd calvard title (Daybreak 2) is divisive.....
Just beat it, thought i beat it forever ago, underesitimated what "finale" meant unlike alot of games its a full chapter. Not a complaint just a bit misleading for me. Put me in the wrong mindframe so made the last chapter feel a bit slow, once i got back into it i LOVED it, great ending!!
Just started this game and im loving it. I love legend of heroes series and have played all the prequels to date imagine my surprise when this game throw me a new characters and region :DDDD
The new battle system was fun! real time action is a good addition ! the UI for xipha tho.. can be confusing at times, which they can keep it simple, too many text and things going on screen.
oh well, it seems time to beat prob give me more than 50 hours ! probably gonna take me 3 weeks . lessgoo
Finisshed up my english patch playthrough last night, however now that the English version out I plan on going in and getting the plat for it though I'm not going to do ng nightmare this time I'm saving that for ng+
So today my birthday, and I got convinced that I wanted to start another playthrough of this with the English patch. It going to be cool because I can see how nightmare ng will be before the english version comes out in 2 months.
Beat this last night, It was overall a fantastic game and it werid to have played a game in jpn but it was an experience for sure, my final time was 164 hours (using a VN OCR adds up to a lot of that total if io played on pc with the English paytch starch 60 hours of that). Now im taking a trails break till Azure in March and it will be very needed as i feel the burnout.
Finally on my school break till mid-January. I am on chapter 1 at the moment and I could not get a VN OCR to work so I went with google lens for the translation which is doing its job well (doing NPC dialogue too is an excellent thing just having to do it after the dialogue happens because it either that or do it for every line and it more convenient to do it after the fact). I have not done much combat but the changes have been very good, and I am excited to get into it more.
Got these games on Monday too. Planning on playing them after I get through trails from Zero and Hajimari No Kiseki (plan on getting an English patch for it on the PC jpn version). first time I imported something from Japan.
