Dusty opener for a great shmup series

The graphics look dated by today's standards. I mean a screenshot of it still looks nice I think, it's just when you play it every level looks the same. I still liked the sound though.
Gameplay:
It's the first in the Star Soldier series, but already has some experimental ideas. The gameplay and powerups is standard vertical shmup. But for one you can fly beneath environment platforms in order to dodge enemies, but also making it impossible for you to shoot anything. At first it feels like a glitch, but once I realized this was intended, I used this from time to time to pass more difficult areas of the levels unharmed. Second the boss battles have a time limit, where the boss escapes after a certain time, and if it does you have to redo the level.
Difficulty:
The difficulty is okay in this one, if you can get past the fact that you are supposed to redo one or the other stage due to the escaping bosses.
Conclusion:I played it mainly to see where some of my most favored shmups came from. I have to say it plays well, but feels boring after a while, since all the levels look the same, the enemies don't really vary, and even the bosses are only 2 different ones reappearing in a set pattern. I was also willing to believe this was an endless game, but actually there is an ending that comes very unexpected. If you are a fan of the series you can check it out and enjoy it, but it certainly looks dated.
