This is the perfect example of a strategy fps. A lot of games will toss in controlling unit mechanics and just hope it works when those kind of games rely so much on good AI and proper callouts/actions to be able to call. The unit control is the PRIMARY focus of hells highway. You feel like just another infantry unit and just a supporting member of a greater effort in a war. Incredible and unique FPS game that wont be for everyone if your just looking to run & gun. This game was sadly ignored by many (myself included) to play COD back in its prime.
On the game’s initial release I remember reviewing it well. But soon after I found myself in an EB Games and saw brand new versions of the game for 10 bucks or so. I couldn’t believe it. I played the first two on Xbox and loved the combination of squad tactics and pretty good shooting mechanics.
If you too enjoyed those you will be happy to hear that this is very much in the same vein, almost the same game, really, albeit with better fidelity and a couple new mechanics--notably the ‘cinematic camera’ that appears after a certain combat takedown is achieved.
The cutscenes and general story are like an overly self-serious Band Of Brothers aping scenes of Saving Private Ryan. I just ignored that and enjoyed solving the scenarios.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast that wants to play authentically recreated engagements of significant events in Holland following September 17, 1944, or whether you’re looking for a strong single player story-based shooter to loose yourself in for a week, or if you’re up for a squad-based combat game with some genuinely intelligent enemies to fight, this is definitely your bag.
