Much of the gameplay remains the same, as the game's protagonist has to sneak past guards, outsmart them using various gadgets and defeat the tricky boss enemies. The game expanded its predecessor's cover mechanic, with Solid Snake or Raiden able to take cover behind walls or objects and pop out to shoot at enemies, while the improved enemy AI allowed enemies to also take cover from the player. I just recently got into these games. A few months ago I bought the HD collection and when I first tried playing Sons of Liberty I got pissed because it was old and, by default, hard. The controls took quite some time to master. Once I gave the game another shot, however, I was surprised by how much fun I had playing, and how much I was drawn to the completely crazy, overly-complicated plot. Despite being a 2001 game, there were a lot of elements I had never seen in stealth games, including some of the top stealth titles today: if you get shot and start bleeding profusely, enemies can track your trail, sniping enemies is quite difficult unless you have taken something to calm your nerves, holding up enemies, etc. I haven't seen a boss battle in some time, so man what a game to jump back into boss battles. While some cutscenes were painstakingly long and on more than one occasion almost made me late to class or work, it was nice to be immersed in a story that is both ridiculous and believable, with deep characters, political intrigue, and the occasional sex joke. While I was initially frustrated with the fixed camera angles, it wasn't long before I was using it to my advantage and outsmarting enemies and bosses.
