Grand Theft Auto is the first game in the Grand Theft Auto series and a sandbox-crime game published by Rockstar Games. The original Grand Theft Auto is made up of a series of levels each set in one of the three cities in the game. In each level, the player has a target number of points to achieve, and five lives to attain the score. The score counter doubles as a money meter; the player can spend this money on paint jobs and various other things. However, any money spent is of course taken away from the score, making the goal that little bit further away. On obtaining the target number of points, the player must then drive to a certain location to complete the level, which allows progress to the next one. Read less

2/10 - Terrible

TL;DR - The origins of the now-famous GTA series. It is a top-down open-world game that has you performing different types of crimes, but it has aged so poorly that I found it impenetrable. It gets the award for being the first game I've ever dropped.

OPEN-WORLD ACTION - Players assume the role of a criminal working for various crime syndicates across three fictional cities—Liberty City, San Andreas, and Vice City.

PROS:

++ Music. The music on offer is quite catchy actually!

++ Scale. For a PS1 game, I do find the scale of the game to be impressive.

++ Origin. There's a lot of things I saw in the game that are still core to the series today. So that was pretty neat.

CONS:

-- Controls. The controls aged terribly, and makes playing the game straight up unbearable. Everything feels so sluggish.

-- One-hit kill. You get shot once, you're wasted. And if a cop catches you, you're immediately busted. It's just too punishing for me to have any fun.

-- No maps. Good luck knowing where to go. I spent so much time driving in circles because all I can rely on is this stupid arrow on top of the screen. You practically have to memorize the entire game's map to be able to have fun with this game.

I was ten years old when I went on my first rampage. It was 1998 and somehow, some way Grand Theft Auto had made its way onto our home computer. I bet it was one of my brothers friends who burned him a copy. It started out innocent. Me being a ten year old kid of course, the first thing I did was to get into a nice, fast car. I loved just driving around, stealing cars, trying different ones. Learning the handling and the feel of the different vehicles. Sooner or later you hit somebody. Screaming, they crumble and crunch underneath you as you leave a bloody trail behind your car, as your mouth hangs open. You get a taste for blood.

I knew I shouldn't, but I just couldn't stop. You just want to find out what the limits of the game are, so you go completely postal, rampaging and wreaking havoc on the city and its citizens. All while having a surprisingly grand ol' time. I did missions every now and then but I wasn't that good at English yet. I loved navigating the menus and it's something I remember vividly to this day. GTA started a legacy, and I've played every single release since the original in '98. Hell, I even played Lemmings before this, that DMA made. Come to think of it, that might have been my first rampage...
