God of War 2018 was such an emotionally gripping game from the start, and as it fully unfolds you'll be feeling that sad Dad single player feel that first party Sony games have made themselves known for. Regardless, the game is stunning at 4K with HDR, the controls handle satisfyingly well and the music is really something to behold -- I've tossed on the God of War 2018 soundtrack many many times since beating the game. The game was jaw-dropping in parts, and at times a little frustrating with some of the puzzle aspects (throwing your axe to hit a bell, with really tight timing on some of it will take some effort).

The characters in the game are nothing short of amazing, hitting that Norse mythology vibe well, but I won't spoil it for anyone (just play it). Could I have done without the QTE to finish fights, sure, but the finishers were pretty badass. Some of the fights are pretty damn tough as well, and there's a decent amount of builds you can go for -- or you can just toss on whatever the game presents to you and make it work. I'd imagine New Game+ is decent, as there's more to acquire and tougher optional fights (Valkyries) you will likely struggle with on a first playthrough.

I mostly completed the main story and spent some time doing the Niflheim rogue-lite area for currency to buy certain armor / weapons before completing the game in 44 hours.

I'll probably return to the series for the sequel God of War: Ragnarok in 2024 -- I own it on PS5, but I may play it on PC.

So the Flying Dark Elves enemies are really badly designed. Valkyries can be stunned by a combo, but this particular enemy can apparently suddenly fly during the middle of the combo and drop a bomb that blinds me. The bomb rapidly explodes and I am in the middle of my combo, so no way can I get out of it. In the meantime, the flying elf summons two additional enemies which surround me and attack from behind. I am really struggling to have fun with this game, which is a shame, because I like the setting and the spectacle it offers.

Oh, and the enemies feel very spongey on the normal setting.

I don't get the game. I do not like the combat, I just can't get the hang of it. It doesn't click with me. I find it overly complicated when I can simply deal with most enemies by just throwing the axe around and moving away from them, ocassionaly countering them when I cannot get away in time. The platforming sucks. I love a good platforming puzzle, I loved the Prince of Persia series or the Jedi Fallen Order kind, where you can run around. But in here you simply follow the yellow lines. I also hate how there are menus upon menus. Why must every game have crafting and RPG mechanics? I love Baldurs Gate III and Divinity Original Sin, I love RPG's, but that is not why I play God of War for. I want spectacle and action, not worry about mid maxing and the level difference between me and my enemies. I actually decided I really wouldn't bother with those systems until I encountered a difficulty spike. I am about 10 hours in and I am really, really struggling with the game. I see the high production value, but where is the fun in the game?

I finished the game a few days ago... and I don't know man, I feel quite dissapointed. I've tried on multiple difficulties and I beat it on Give me God of War, which wasn't fun at all. The early game was overly punishing, which to be fair, is how it should be, but half shot off screen or one shot because you misstimed a parry feels awful, not because I made a mistake, but because the punishment is that severe. After doing some sidequests, the game got too easy, repetetive and enemies were too spongy for how simple they are. Later down the line, I could tank through everything with healing and defensive buffs, and if I died I'd respawn with full health and all cooldowns up, making the fight easier than before. The story is fine, a bit hamfisted at times but I'm actually excited about Ragnarok, I just hope the combat is MUCH better. Fighting a very limited pool of enemies, the 'same' (slight differences) bosses, without anything super exciting happening for hours is rough. I really think the game could have benefitted from more unique moments, fighting exciting bosses that have been set up, instead of a random troll or ancient appearing. I'm in the minority, which is fine, I just hope my problems have been fixed in Ragnarok.

Loud half baked hot take:

GOD OF WAR (2018) IS THE GORDON RAMSAY OF VIDEO GAMES.

I'm supposed to learn how to cook an egg before making a soufflé but I'm a cocky dink who thinks I could beat the original GoW with a spoon, so how bad could god difficulty be?

I was stuck for an hour on the fight that introduced projectile enemies. My ass succinctly handed to me. A mistake of a boy.

Returning two days later, after licking my wounded pride, I somehow, via my subconscious backburner threading the learning curve or universal luck, bested the fight in the first try and immediately became full of salt.

Why isn't this a Thor game? I don't want to slap around damage sponges, pick up all collectibles, read all glyphs, craft whatnots or fiddle with runes. Kratos with a stats page feels pandering. His damage output is 5? Fuck off.

By all accounts, GoW 2018 is a full plate meal and yes, I'm stupid for the difficulty setting. Its a well crafted, expertly presented, undeniable talent but I feel like a fucking donkey eating fist fulls of butter on the vegas strip.

I've lost my mind, @BMO.

Why have I started playing this AND on the hardest difficulty at the same time?

PS+ made it free but my time sure as hell isn't.

I got this and started playing on PC out of curiosity to see if I still stand by my absolutely scathing review of the game. So far, I still stand by it. I absolutely detest this camera, but I do like it during cinematics. I still don't like the one-take camera being a thing as it serves no purpose thematically and makes the game as a whole feel worse to play, but it does make for some good shots and framing. 5 hours in, I have not had a single fun fight as I manage this camera and multiple enemies move away and unlock my locked in view. Your starting moveset is much more lacking compared to games of the past the first God of War and Devil May Cry 3, games that came out in 2005, so it feels so button mashy. The battlefields don't give a clear view of its rules such as you dont really know what really are walls that you can pin/kick your enemies to. Yeah, I still really don't like this game.
