Maybe it was destiny having Octopath 2 as the main image of this thread, but it's surely one of the best RPGs I ever played. It's an experience that can heal your soul

My weekends being consumed by work (or errands I only have time for during the weekends because of work) has made me play for at least an hour almost every night instead. Why I didn't do that before - I don't know, but this is kinda working for me. I feel like I am wasting less time in general.

Got all 8 characters. In the mood to mix and match. Pretty satisfied with my starting pick who I can't remove from the party.

The encounter design in this game is bizarre. It has random battles like traditional Final Fantasy, but also in the very first area outside of the starting town it gives you a zero MP, multitarget attack that lets you oneshot every single pack of non-boss enemies I've come across so far, two dozen hours into the game. And like two hours in it hands you the ability to always move first at the start of every fight, so basic mobs never even get a chance to do anything.
Why even have non-boss fights at all at that point? The game itself clearly thinks they're boring, and they're a constant drag on my enjoyment of the lovely environments and simple character stories. It feels like they're there almost purely out of deference to tradition. As the genre moves forward, I hope more RPGs can find a way to deemphasize combat without alienating their audience.

The lack of an all-encompassing story is giving me a sense of freedom that I currently enjoy. I guess this is my type of open world. Still not sure how to proceed with tackling the individual stories - if I want to do all eight together or focus on a handful of characters first. Recruiting all playable characters in the meantime, and then I'll decide. I wish the interaction when someone joins your travels is less generic though because right now, it just comes across as so random.
Everyone's saying I should steal everything from NPCs but that's a beggar sharing a loaf of bread with another child.

Two things are stopping me: (1) just got another game fairly recently and still playing it, and (2) I want to hear the Layton news next week first. Similar thing happened about a year ago, when I was playing something and I skipped Triangle Strategy, only to pick it up about a month later cause I really wanted to play (and no regrets with that). I think this time though I have even a stronger penchant for a distraction.

Thank the Lord above that they didn't name this one "Hexadecapath Traveler".
