A treasure for Dragon Ball Z fans
This review is for the PlayStation 2 version

This game is extremely rich in characters, items, transformations, techniques and game modes. The graphics are great, the combat mechanics are very good and the stages sure can be challenging. The game contains many playable characters and you can equip different items to make your fighting strategy different with many combinations. The minigames are fun, the main story references the anime story well and it's simply...fun to play, because the characters' movements are fluid, you can play with the same character in different moments of their timelines, using old and new techniques they learned along the anime series. I think even those who don't know the Dragon Ball franchise can enjoy this game and even get introduced to the franchise by it. I had a lot of fun with this game, it was really worth playing it.

I bounce back and forth between thinking this is the worst DBZ game ever and thinking it's the best. I'll be referring to this game as a Budokai game because it's basically a Budokai 3.5.

Pros
  • A lot of costumes. The most I've seen in the Budokai series.
  • Probably the best Budokai roster. I'm more interested in the characters gained than the characters that were lost from Budokai 3.
  • Improved skill/capsule system. No longer need to have 3 Kamehameha slots for a boosted move, you can have that in 1 slot. Same thing for transformations. It's also straightforward in how to unlock everything too. All characters also have a universal grab without needing to equip it as a skill. There isn't a breakthrough capsule though, so unfortunately there isn't a way to have all skills available at the same time.
  • Aura dashes and aura guards return. This time, aura dashes are free, so it isn't just high ki characters having an advantage. It's a nice way to add a defensive option and keep the game fast-paced.
Cons
  • Very grindy. The need for zeni is crazy if you want to get all of the available capsules.
  • Back to retelling the story …

Cons
  • Very grindy. The need for zeni is crazy if you want to get all of the available capsules.
  • Back to retelling the story of the series like the rest of the games. This time with more mini-games that I don't like and a pointless overworld.
  • Collecting dragon balls is actually pointless. It's actually faster to grind zeni to unlock the same things the dragon balls unlock.
  • There is no drawback to spamming hyper mode. No reason to not enter hyper mode and spam ultimate attacks, a lot of which are unblockable and not easy to react to.
  • Difficulty curve is non-existent. Random difficulty spikes throughout the story mode that makes going through the game a chore at times. This is mitigated when you get to the point where you can afford to get capsules to make the game easier though, but by the time I got to the post-game, I resorted to using Senzu Bean, Transforming, activating hyper mode, then spamming Special Beam Cannon. Effective, but not very fun.
