Unlike the previous 3D hack 'n slash games before it, this game is a 2D side scroller with HD graphic sprites and very bloody attacks. It's unknown whether or not the game takes place in the same continuity as the rest of the series as its story seems self-contained. The game has a high level of difficulty, comparable to that of games such as Ninja Gaiden and some of the achievements require hours of work to achieve. Read less

This game is a stylish 2D side-scrolling reboot of the BloodRayne series, ditching its previous 3D action roots for a hand-drawn, gothic comic-book aesthetic, though I admit that this was my first BloodRayne title. The game is visually impressive, with fluid animations and a distinct art style that makes every frame look sharp and alive. However, this visual polish is heavily undermined by slippery controls and punishing level design.

Rayne’s default sprinting makes her feel difficult to control with precision, especially during the game’s demanding platforming sections, enemy encounters are relentless, and the lack of variety in both foes and environments makes the experience feel repetitive after a few stages. Difficulty spikes and unfair checkpoint placements are frustrating, often forcing long replays after minor mistakes. The game had potential, but for many, and this is why I couldn't finish it and I would only recommend this for hardcore fans of BloodRayne in general.

The combat system, while conceptually appealing, struggles to feel consistently rewarding. The MC's acrobatic moves, executions, and blood-based abilities look impressive in motion, but they demand a level of precision that the controls don’t always support. Encounters often devolve into trial-and-error rather than skillful mastery, and boss fights tend to emphasize endurance over creativity, reinforcing the game’s reliance on difficulty as its primary hook.

Ultimately, this game feels like a case where style clearly outweighed substance. The game’s striking presentation and confident aesthetic direction suggest a bold reinvention of the franchise, but mechanical shortcomings and pacing issues prevent it from fully delivering on that promise. What remains is a visually memorable but uneven experience, one that may appeal to fans drawn by its art and challenge, but is likely to frustrate anyone seeking a more balanced and accessible action-platformer.

I wanted to like this game. I had played the first Bloodrayne oh so many springs ago en the GameCube and enjoyed quite a lot. This side scrolling version is quite different but it inherits the cool aesthetic and hack and slash ethos. The art design is really great although I wish there were more variety in the enemies. But that's as far as I can compliment it. Aside from the sound being terrible, with a generic heavy metal score with no personality, the controls are just a clusterfuck. In this 2D sidescrolling game there's no crouch, long jumps are performed in the oposite direction the character is facing, and the attack and grab actions are not fas enough. I often found myself cut to death because I press the grab button too quickly so that my character just stood there without doing nothing. You also cannot feed on enemies that are alive but down on the floor, which is ludicrous and annoying. To add insult to injury, on the PC the default keyboard mapping is complete madness and there's no language options so was tortured by the awful Spanish translation.
