Tried but couldn't get into it

I don't actually want to give any star rating to this game because I don't feel I can. I tried multiple times to play this game over the course of a couple years. It seems like one I'd probably like. But the mechanics are just so deep and the learning curve so steep, I felt like I was failing in the main campaign constantly. There are some decent basic tutorials at the beginning of the game and it does goad you to try doing some things -- I felt like I was following all that and yet still losing. Not sure what I was doing wrong. 21 hours on record and still felt like I had little grasp of the game -- I recognize this is a game and a series that people spend thousands of hours in. I don't have that background from any prior games in the series so it just felt perpetually overwhelming. I have plenty of other games to play, so I'm just giving this one up. I have my eye on the sequel, which has had some gameplay reveals lately. Depending on how reviews turn out, and especially if there is any mention of it doing a good job onboarding new players, I may check that one out.

I beat another campaign of this over the weekend. Each playthrough with a different faction and leader feels like a fresh game!

This time I played as the Brettonians, a faction that rather than emphasizing land conquest, emphasizes gaining chivalry, the primary way is beating evil enemies, and creating important buildings. So, rather than conquering territory and eliminating factions, I solidified my home front, basically taking all of Bretonnia, and joining with other brettonian factions, and then sent powerful armies out to evil domains to raze cities and beat armies. It was incredibly fun, with me nearly always on the offensive.

The final battle of the campaign is a show down between me and the forces of chaos. I had to send one army all the way into the chao waste, a trek in itself, and then fight 3 waves of chaos armies, each led by one of the chaos generals. SUCH A COOL END.

Warhammer Total war is a phenomenal strategy game, and if you like strategy games it is a must play!

After downloading more DLC, and the Grimhammer mod, I have dove back into this game, and have been loving it.

Grimhammer helps stop you from spamming only the best units, by attaching unlocks for better units to buildings, stopping you from recruiting more say Giants, or elite Swordmen, until you build another of their buildings.

This helps give those early units a place in your army in the late game, and helps those elite units feel elite and special throughout the game.

It also increases the garrison size, having every building chain unlock garrison units, though some are better then others. This means a roving band of 4 orc units can't take my economic outposts with ease. It does make early game conquering tough, but I have been enjoying the challenge.

Amazing strategy game

I loved the first Total War: Warhammer, I thought it took one of my favorite franchises, and improved on the formula in ways I didn't even know I wanted. Well Warhammer II takes an already amazing game, and makes it even better.

I loved the first Total War: Warhammer, I thought it took one of my favorite franchises, and improved on the formula in ways I didn't even know I wanted. Well Warhammer II takes an already amazing game, and makes it even better.

First, the addition of more playable civs gives greater variety to play thrus and opponents. This, when combined with DLC, has led to the greatest variety in playstyle ever in a total war game. Some civs like Warriors of Chaos, and Beastmen, don't have cities but instead rove as plunderers, others like Bretonnians win thru a series of crusades, smashing evil armies apart, then you have more traditional win methods of conquering territory.

There is also some fine tuning to things like magic and diplomacy, which was needed.

The games updates also include a massive campaign style, which combines the two games into one amazing, huge game, where individual civs can conquer any city, but are penalized for ruling cities outside of their preferred ecosystem preferences.

If you have found Total War games in the past to have end game that drags, then the campaign of this game is for you. Rather then needing to batter and win thru conquest, you must grab key cities, and complete rituals, while protecting your ritual cities, ending in an amazingly fun and satisfying battle against waves of foes.

I have enjoyed this game so much that I bought literally all the DLC for the game which is something that I normally wouldn't do.

Highly recommend to any fans of strategy, civilization management games.
