Started out slow, but it builds up quick. Once you leave the Grizzlies, the world opens up a bit and this turn of the century landscape is filled with things to do and see. Honestly, one of the most rewarding things to do is ride around and enjoy the beautiful landscape. I was never a huge fan of the random encounters in GTA, but the ones here are fun, and sometimes generally bizarre or rewarding.
Beyond that, the story is fantastic. A group of likeminded individuals (gang) that’s still seeking the wilderness and lawlessness that the West once promised - a lifestyle that’s quickly being extinguished by continued population growth and the creation of a federal Pinkerton Agency to hunt down and arrest criminals. As the gang runs into more trouble, Dutch descends further and further, eventually leading to everyone turning on each other. Finding out Micah was the one informing to the Pinkertons was surprising - he’s the worst of the bunch. Wonder if getting tuberculosis was the only way the story went, or if there was another ending?
Dutch always seems to be looking for one more score, and at this point in the story, the “perfect” score that he’s looking gets thinner and thinner as an excuse. His quest seems less like the arrival at a destination, but rather the lifestyle that the journey supports on the way there.
Controls are top notch, and for a third-person console shooter it handles surprisingly well, especially considering you’re on horseback sometimes which adds more chaos to trying to control your reticule.
UPDATE:
Didn’t realize the epilogue was so involved…more to come
