One of the only souls-like games I’ve ever enjoyed
Plague of Yamorn is a very soulsy Metroidvania that really sucked me in. The pixel art style is just so charming and grotesque - not unlike Ratuz or Depths of Sanity. But what really pulled me in was the challenging but satisfying gameplay loop.

It’s a true Metroidvania. Unlike Blasphemous, it has necessary ability gating and tons of backtracking, but it also has a simple yet addicting RPG element (which I usually hate).
The gameplay is very combat-heavy, but the enemy attacks are well telegraphed and require focus and care. You start out very weak and powerless, but truly grow powerful and deadly in a very satisfying way .
Coming from someone that hated salt and sanctuary, castlevania, and pretty much every soulslike (besides blasphemous) - this game is special. It has a little indie rough-around-the-edges design, so if you can only tolerate AAA-level polish it wont be for you. But if you love quirky Metroidvanias with a dark gory aesthetic, this is a must buy.
Absolutely one of my favorites of the year!
