Wow, feels like devs had a goal to waste my time

Very mislead and disappointed.

Technically the beginning of this game has a lot of similarities with Subnautica: limited oxygen, gather resources, expand your abilities.
But they managed to make the game extremely tedious.

The story let me down too. From the trailers and screenshots it looked promising.
In reality it's just trying to be funny too hard, non-stop. And fails.

I flew into space and waited to die of suffocation so I don't have to hear any of those cringe jokes or do any chores.
That is a canon ending for me.

Fun but Flawed Humourous Flotational Feelings
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

Some aspects of the game feel a bit janky. While there is crafting and tinkering involved, I wish the mechanics weren't so rigid and restrictive, it could benefit from being more open-ended. The game's focus on specific objectives makes collecting random items feel pointless, which detracts from the experience. Additionally, the game is overly challenging and poorly balanced when it comes to oxygen management, which can make it frustrating at times.

That said, this is one of the most satisfying spacewalking games out there, offering an immersive simulation of floating outside your ship and exploring wreckage. The maps are static and handcrafted, adding a unique touch. It's an enjoyable experience, but only for a while.

2 Games. 1 Fun, 1 Meh?

Breathedge is an open-world, space, survival game. It's obvious that it takes a lot of inspiration from other games in the genre. You start the game in a crashed space-ship with the goal of upgrading your gear so you can venture further from your oxygen-filled shuttle. Oxygen is the priority when trying to survive. You have food and drink gauges you need to keep filled, as well as temperature mechanics and a radiation counter. You fly around space collecting supplies, learning blueprints and building bases. If you have played Subnautica, you know exactly what you're in for.

The story, which is largely exposited to you by your spacesuit AI, has you upgrading your suit and completing quests to lower the radiation. Lowering the radiation also lets you travel deeper into space and explore more debris. The game is extremely comedic and 4th-wall breaking, which is largely subjective. But, to me, the comedy lands about 50% of the time. The graphical style matches the comedic tone by being fairly "cartoony", but still looks very good with plenty of detail.

I very much enjoyed this game for first 2/3s of it, Without spoiling anything, there is a clear break between the first …

I very much enjoyed this game for first 2/3s of it, Without spoiling anything, there is a clear break between the first part of the game and the second. The second "part" changes the gameplay loop almost entirely, and becomes much more linear. It feels that the developers may have tried to have certain mechanics from the second part in the first part, but were unable to make it fit. It's unfortunate, because I can see where if they were able to, the game could have been paced very well.

Unfortunately, having to slog through the second "part" and a bit of unused space really soured the experience. If you enjoyed Subnautica you will enjoy this game but it doesn't rise up to the level.

If you haven't played Subnautica, play Subnautica.

Wrong in almost every aspect
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version
  • Playtime: 1h45m (half Normal, half Story)

  • Played: 2026

  • Context: The only survival crafting game i've ever liked was Subnautica.

The Good

  • Different difficulty modes.
  • It at least tries not to be completely generic.

The Bad

  • It fails at not being completely generic.
  • You run out of oxygen incredibly fast.
  • Sleep-healing cannot be sped up.
  • Offers too little guidance where to go.
  • Some interactions require you to hold a button for no good reason.
  • Interactions don't always work even if you see the relevant symbol.
  • Items in stash can't be used for crafting.
  • Uninteresting crafting system.
  • Awful music.

The Ugly

  • The suit has the worst narration i've seen since TotalBiscuit ""narrated"" Space Pirates and Zombies.
  • The attempt at humour is so awful that when i accidentally forgot to skip the intro when starting a new game i Alt+F4-ed so i could avoid it.

Conclusion

Like most games in the genre Breathedge loves wasting your time. The one thing that sets them apart is also one of the worst aspects of the game.

Terinati's review of Breathedge

Played this game to fill the void left after finishing both Subnautica games, and while the gameplay loop/mechanics scratched that itch, for the most part the humor, setting, and story all failed to land with me. There's a lot of self-referential humor, which normally I applaud when it's subtle. This wasn't subtle at all, and it was such a constant stream that it felt like the writers were calling me stupid for enjoying this genre of game. There was also a lot of crude/toilet humor, which is fine but not my schtick. Later on in the game it pivots from toilet humor to more political satire which I enjoyed. There's not dialogue per se because there's really only one talking character (the spacesuit AI) but its snarkiness does provide a pretty consistent supply of chuckles. Overall everything is just too zany to get the kind of enjoyment and immersion I was looking for after Subnautica.

If the same developers made another game that was less gonzo in its writing and aesthetic, I would give it a shot and probably enjoy it significantly more.

Subnautica IN SPACE!
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

I'm a sucker for exploration games. Give me a pretty landscape, some weird plot and survival mechanics and I'm hooked.

Breadthedge is trying to be Subnautica in space, only funny. It succeeds partially. While the crafting is ok and survival in the early game is on a knife's edge, the space environment isn't nearly as interesting or as beautiful as the land-bound Subnautica.

The humor is and-and-miss, with wacky gags, stupid remarks and some chuckle-inducing concepts (such as using Shawarma-induced gas as propellant). I didn't laugh out loud once while playing.

The plot takes precedence in the second half of the game and the survival parts pretty much disappear as the action picks up.

All in all, it was nice while it lasted although it had too much trotting back-and-forth for my liking. I also encountered some technical difficulties like looong loading times, save sync issues and some transient problems with my Radeon video card that were annoying.

If the 'Haha' fits, this might be a good game.

Gonna come right out of the gate with saying that, if the comedy style of this game (which includes, sex, potty humour, comedy at the studios expense, comedy at the players expense, and a mix of other kinda low hanging fruits) is not in your style. Then this game is probably going to be quite tedious. This game bets a lot on the comedy.

Beyond that, this game is a very mixed bag, but it enjoys having you go back and forth a lot. The durability system of the tools often have you needing to go back to craft a new tool after it breaks (unless i guess you craft new tools and throw almost broken down tools away). The game is very generous with food and water, so that's mostly an inventory management thing rather than actual survival.

The real survival is in the oxygen department. There are various ways to get oxygen so it's rarely a problem but it does put some tension on the exploration part when going to new areas.

Even though the game could definetly had me running in less long corridors and had me running back and forth less. Tools that didn't break would have gone quite a long way for me.

TLDR; If you really enjoy the comedy, this game has a lot of it for you. If you don't, this game has a risk of just being a tedious slog.

Atrocious gameplay

One star given for the humor, it kept me playing this unplayable game for way longer than I should’ve.

Tedious..

It shows itself to be so willing to skewer a genre that’s ripe for it, but then it falls into the same traps and pitfalls that you’d expect in any other survival game. If you’re a fan of the genre anyway, that may not matter, and you may appreciate a bit of humour added on to the usual, but if you’re hoping that Breathedge might be a breath of fresh air, look elsewhere.

Game is so fckn broken. Had a softlock where i didn't grab the contents of a safe immediately, that contained a vital blueprint to progress, ( was getting out of oxygen, came to balloon to replenish), and when coming back to the safe the contents are there but can't be interacted with ( it was supposed to be grabbed by hand ). Uninstalled, refunded.

I really want to play this game but the game doesnt want me to play it.

My first few tries, I could barely get through the intro because it kept crashing. Apparently this is a known problem across all launchers. I tried the quick fix the devs recommend on the steam forums and while it did enable me to start the game and play normally, every loading screen is still 5 minutes long and my screen completely freezes until the game starts again out of nowhere. I have died a couple of times already because oxygen is so low and then im confronted with the loading screens which kills my enthusiasm.

This game is barely playable and im hoping the issue gets resolved one day. For now, im sadly benching this. Thank god I got this for free otherwise I would have been royally pissed off.
