These were two of my favorite games from the PS2 era and with this collection, remain some of my favorites from the PS3 era.
Without spoiling anything, the plot of the original two installments is basically what the box art promises: Kratos rage-quits on his old bosses at Olympus and takes it out on them in the most homicidal way possible, as well as pretty much anyone else that gets in his way. It's simple, but effective and highly entertaining.
Plot aside, there is still a lot of other things these games have going for them as well:
- The graphics are antiquated by modern standards but were technical marvels of the PS2 and don't detract from the game. Environments are well done and the voice cast is top-notch.
- The length is perfect, and you can beat both in about 20 hours combined.
- The difficulty is balanced, the combat is a well-streamlined version of the style found in DmC, and the fixed camera actually works well for a game this old (!). Some QTEs are aggravating though.
