agurczuk's review of Rad Rodgers

Rarely does a game annoy me. They're better or worse but generally don't get me angry. This one did and it's not something to be happy about.

Rad rodgers world one is an old school platformer. Retro even. Although in a bright shiny form. But it's not a good game.

So starting with visuals. The game looks good. Its vibrant, colourful, full of detail, nice 3d models and animations. But it hurts the eyes. At any given time so much is happening you can't make out what's going on on the screen. To be honest the first levels caused my eyes to hurt. It gets better later on when levels are a bit toned down but it's too late. It also is power hungry, you need something better to play this which isn't something I expect from a platformer.

Story wise I have no idea what's going on. You play as a kid sucked into tv and stuck in a game with annoying console as your buddy. And that's it, go get em. When I started fighting the final boss and struggled with it I realised I don't really know why I need to do it. So basically rage quit …

Story wise I have no idea what's going on. You play as a kid sucked into tv and stuck in a game with annoying console as your buddy. And that's it, go get em. When I started fighting the final boss and struggled with it I realised I don't really know why I need to do it. So basically rage quit it and saw the ending on youtube and was glad it was over.

Controls are not bad specifically but far from perfect and you can easily miss a jump here or there. And the fact that devs thought some floating islands have climbable ledges while others don't while you could definitely make the jump is annoying.

Level design while pretty linear is ok. Nothing special but nothing spectacular. On each level you need to collect four parts of something in order to unlock the door. You get to collect an additional key to open a door here and there and go to the 8bit world to use your buddy to fix some glitches or something.

For the last - two most obnoxious things about the game. The humor and enemies.

The game tries to be have that 90s duke nukem funny. But what actually happens is the humor in the game is like it was written by a 15 year old but its only funny to a 12 year old who gets occasional chuckle out of bad word here and there. It wasn't funny. But it was repetitive which means annoying. I don't really know who the intended audience is but whatever it is they failed.

Second worst offence of the game is the enemies. They are essentially bullet sponges. You gave to shoot a lot of time to get the kill. And in platformer that's never a good choice, especially when you don't have good means for a fight. You've got no defensive options, and jumping over enemies also doesn't work so what you do is you stand from afar and shoot. And the game feels more suited to mouse and keyboard than gamepad which is also a shame.

And so comes the final boss. It's hard. Not unbeatable but I multi stage unfairness with uncomfortable controls. And they turn it upside down - literally. So weak controls, reversed. I have better things to do.

Can't really recommend it.
