Yo ho, yo ho, a hedgehog's life for me 🎶
This review is for the Nintendo DS version

Here's what I thought I knew about Sonic Rush Adventure: "It's like Sonic Rush, except worse because boats and crafting."

Now that I've actually played it: This might be one of my favorite Sonic games! 😮

I know, I know: You have to replay levels to grind for materials. That's not something I can defend, it's unnecessary padding of a short game. But it helps that the levels are all fun and distinct, with far fewer unfair deathtraps than its predecessor and a more forgiving retry system to boot. I also enjoyed the "mystery islands," which offered shorter challenges that helped add variety to the experience.

And yes, I know: Making this a swashbuckling pirate tale is an odd choice. But seafaring theme aside, the touch mechanics of these segments play like natural extensions of Sonic Rush's special stages. Plus, there's something really appealing to me about connecting fast-paced stages and collectibles with exploration (which is probably why I'm such a dork for Sonic Adventure).

The bosses were all fun, the emeralds were challenging but attainable, and the whole thing looks and sounds great for the DS. Thank you @Reset_Tears and @JoeMD for the recommendation!

The Last of the "Good Old Days"

Really miss when sonic games had creativity and quality like this. Probably not as good as rush 1 and the soundtrack, level design, and music are all a bit of a downgrade but there's no denying this title is a quality one. The water exploration probably annoys more than it adds in the long run but it does give this game it's own unique flavor to be sure.

Fully completed the story

  • Collected all seven Chaos Emeralds and all seven Sol Emeralds
  • Finished Extra Zone

Side Note: I'd almost give this game a 5-stars if it weren't for the repetitive boat sections + required material grinding.

Beat the main game. Time to get all the emeralds and go for the true ending! Really surprised by how much I enjoyed this title :)
