So far this is the best 40k TBS i've played
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

I was excited to play this because somewhere I remember reading that the game mirrors the playstyles of the actual factions in it so I was curious to try that as I don't have experienced with anything but space marines. Unfortunately, the game railroads you into a campaign with ONLY the blood angels and you ONLY fight against tyranids. You can only play the DLCs in a skirmish mode called demonic incursion where (I think) you ONLY can fight demons from Khorne in a kind of almost tower defense like wave format until you lose.

The skirmish mode is actually pretty well designed and it has premade armies that are fully upgraded (the HQ Upgrades you slowly purchase in the single player campaign) and somewhat customized. You can also modify them or build one from scratch. It's a nice way to test your army and probably serves as a training ground for multiplayer.

Unfortunately there are no campaigns, stories or missions for those armies. But, playing with one of them was kinda neat. The necrons have some cool quirks (such as automatically healing every round with some units having a pretty decent chance to resurrect if they die) But unfortunately …

Unfortunately there are no campaigns, stories or missions for those armies. But, playing with one of them was kinda neat. The necrons have some cool quirks (such as automatically healing every round with some units having a pretty decent chance to resurrect if they die) But unfortunately like Warhammer itself, it seems that anything OTHER than the space marines are simply harder to get a feel for how to play with.

Game has good looking models, lore, art, story, setting etc. It have voice acted static custcenes that are fun to listen to their thick british superstitious mumbo jumbo. The upgrades between missions that you purchase (by completing objectives) were cool at first and how it slowly unlocks as you gain more 'commander' type hero characters (which are really just specialist units like Librarians and whatnot) have specail powers, some which i found at times useful, but most not at all. The game is good in my opinion because you can actually play it differently and use units differently depending on your play style or preference.

You want melee? well buy more and master the art of zone of control and the AI Screwing up. You like range? get yourself a mix of close range shooters like aggressors and a longer range option (such as plasma) and you got everything covered on overwatch. Want to beef something up that you are lacking in, you can upgrade the weapons of those units for 30 credits, letting you turn your scout hovercar into a legitimate anti armor threat...

To me this basically strategically felt quite similar to playing Sanctus Reach but with better models, animations, visual details, etc and more satisfaction from its rules and mechanics such as the overwatch and zone of control as well as more unit customization. Units also gain slight bonus to crit chance for every mission they partake in, so there is some incentive to keep them alive but i dont think i'd call it crucial to do so.

However, I'd be lying if I said it wasn't repetitive as hell after 15 hours into it. I probably play at a more calculated and slow pace than most. I really was hoping to run into some demons or orks or something at some point, and that never happened. At least they let you play with some of the Sisters units (they suck though and IMO are terrible or just not worth it to use their skills and synergies when you have other troops already??)

Its definitely a four star Warhammer game but i'm not sure that is saying too much. It's only flaws are its a bit repetitive and doesn't lets you play or fight other factions other than in skirmish. It's too bad its not a bit more like Sanctus Reach in that sense and lets you play full campaigns with the other factions. I also kinda wanted a big-ass killer-tank like a baneblade or a titan at some point. Other than that its essentially a continuation and improvement of Armageddon ->Sanctus reach->Battlesector. while each are different they all mechanically play a bit similarly and this is the next refinement of it.

I really enjoyed this game up until the level (about fifth or sixth) where I was hard-pressed just to hold the area for 4 turns. Then told to mop up the rest of the enemy's forces. which was a joke. I was completely overwhelmed with next to nothing left. This was on normal. I don't mind a bit of a challenge but jeez!
