Happy holidays everyone! While I was filled with the holidays cheers I made the mistake of giving this one a second try. Because, even if I can see why so many people like this franchise just by looking at the clean presentation and world building, I still don’t like it.
Don’t Starve is a mix between a survival game and a rogue-like. Survival games are usually characterized by slowly building yourself from the ground up, while learning about the world and collecting resources in the span of several hours. Rogue-likes on the other hand are about going in fast, playing, dying, learning and repeating, each run being around one hour max. Just with that you can deduce why I think this mix doesn’t work. There are very few things as infuriating as permanently losing a world/character you spent 6 hours grinding because of a dumb mistake.
That said, on the positive side, you can heavily modify your world to make it easier or to not be such a slog to start over, which is very convenient because it allowed me to realize that I not only hate the permadeath, I also dislike the entire game structure.
You need to slowly traverse the world searching for resources to build useful stuff, looking for one in particular might take a couple of in-game days if you are unlucky, and there isn’t only one, so eventualy you are going to have to walk from the point where you set up your camp to the other side of the island where you last saw said resource. I swear that inventory becomes smaller and smaller every time I check.
And even if you do manage to survive long enough, you first couple of playthrough will probably end on the harsh winter. Unless you decide to check the wiki first, which is filled with information about hidden stats, perks, synergies and a bunch of endgame stuff that clearly signaled to me that this game was a compromise of several tens of hours. A compromise that I don’t feel like making, especially since the reward is more Don’t Starve.
Also I don’t like the top-down view, no reason, just personal preference.
