Halo 3 is a shooter game where players primarily experience gameplay from a first-person perspective. Much of the gameplay takes place on foot, but also includes segments focused on vehicular combat. The balance of weapons and objects in the game was adjusted to better adhere to the "Golden Triangle of Halo": these are weapons, grenades, and melee attacks, which are available to a player in most situations. Players may dual-wield some weapons, forgoing the use of grenades and melee attacks in favor of the combined firepower of two weapons. Many weapons available in previous installments of the series return with minor cosmetic and power alterations. Unlike previous installments, the player's secondary weapon is visible on their player model, holstered or slung across the player's back. Halo 3 introduces "support weapons", which are cumbersome two-handed weapons that slow the player, but offer greatly increased firepower in return. In addition to weapons, the game contains a new class of gear called equipment; these items have various effects, ranging from defensive screens to shield regeneration and flares. Only one piece of equipment can be carried at a time. The game's vehicular component has been expanded with new drivable and AI-only vehicles. Read less

Halo 3

Played on the Master Chief Collection.

I had a good time! I played this with friends, unlike the first game so that's definitely part of it. I like the addition of items and more weapons. I have no idea what the story was about, I wasn't paying attention. Campaign and PvP was a good time.

I made a nice, cozy memory of beating this. With 3 levels to go I made myself a White Russian, and since I really only drink socially my tolerance is low. I was pretty toasted by the last level, which was fun in a very dumb action movie way. Also reminiscent of previous vehicle escapes. Had a good time with the game overall. On paper it's better than 1 and 2, but for some reason that never clicked. I never really rushed to play it when I had free time. Also this game loves making you backtrack through a level you just cleared, but refilled with enemies. That scene where you fight alongside the flood was so cool, I wish there was a little more.

Part of my "play all the Halos" thing. Close to beating this one, but hard to find the time to get those last few levels done. This weekend, I hope. Part of my "play all the Halos" thing. Close to beating this one, but hard to find the time to get those last few levels done. This weekend, I hope. I think Halo 3 feels more like Halo 2 than Halo: CE felt to Halo 2. It's, again, another tightening of the formula. The game made an obvious effort to get you into the action fast. It just picks up and goes. But, because of that, I felt like I should have watched a Halo 2 recap. I remember the main beats, though, but I feel a little like I'm missing something. Or maybe the game is more focused with keeping the action running, and not so much on developing its story or world. I can appreciate that, since Halo was the hottest shit at the time, I can see them putting gameplay front and center, since a huge amount of people who play games casually button-mash through the story. Also, gravity hammer rules. What a fun weapon.

I love it. Maybe playing the games in a row helps a lot to enjoying them so much, but his game had the most dynamic vehicle parts and the weapons became really flexible during all the time.

The story seemed quite short, but I still liked it al ot. I don't know how to put it, it satisfies my expectations …

I'm kind of surprised this is so often held up as the best in the franchise.

I'm on The Ark (mission 7/11) and so far the levels feel really short and un-impactful :/ Maybe it all comes together in these last few levels?

The first level of this game feels like an absolute masterclass of the linear first-person shooter. At the time, I loved it, but after 13 years, it feels even better because games (with rare exceptions like Doom Eternal) just aren’t doing it this well.

In the course of just one level, you already see many different enemy types, all of which are a credible threat on Heroic or Legendary difficulty and force different tactics and weapon usage. You are introduced to a full range of power-ups and weapons, including different options like sniping, dual wielding, and several types of alien weaponry that you can pick up right off the dead enemies. They’re presented in several completely different types of combat encounters, like a long bridge, a multi-layer forest with snipers and obstacles, holding down a house against incoming gunships and foot soldiers, close-up encounters with powerful enemies who make smart use of the grenades and shield and health power-ups, and more.

Enemies and AI-controlled allies constantly spout relevant and engaging dialogue. Whether it’s a grunt begging to be spared, a brute calling for the head of the traitorous elite that’s working with you, an ally shouting out your good aim or warning you of a specific enemy around the corner—everything feels so alive and organic, and it’s aided by how organic the actual gameplay is. Thanks to great varied AI behavior, open-endedness of the level layout, and the flexibility of your combat options, it feels so much more engaging to me than most other contemporary and modern FPS / TPS campaigns. Many games today would lock you into cover and say, “Press X to eavesdrop”—not in this game, the opportunity is there but it’s up to you to recognize it and execute it to learn more about your enemy. It’s all very much mechanical behind the scenes but it doesn’t feel like it at all in the moment and it serves world-building above all else rather than just checking off objectives.

Anyway, that’s all. Glad to be revisiting this after so long.
