The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the first 3D open-world game in the Zelda series. Link can travel anywhere and be equipped with weapons and armor found throughout the world to grant him various bonuses. Unlike many games in the series, Breath of the Wild does not impose a specific order in which quests or dungeons must be completed. While the game still has environmental obstacles such as weather effects, inhospitable lands, or powerful enemies, many of them can be overcome using the right method. A lot of critics ranked Breath of the Wild as one of the best video games of all time. Read less

I realised that one of the reasons I'm enjoying this game so much is that it captures perfectly the hiking experience. You look at a map, see where you what to go, follow the trail, cross paths with fellow travellers, bear the weather, get to know the flora and fauna. You also need to manage your stamina, specially in steep climbs, and eat along the way. At the end you might spend the night in a mountain hut.

Morning thought as I woke up. So in BOTW world there's fish-people, rock-people, bird-people and... women-people?

It's kind of amazing how even with the open world setup, the shrines are organised in such a way that they, for the most part, follow a nice progression of showing you mechanic and then building upon it. It's a sign of masterfully world design that funnels the player through an intended path without any invisible wall.

I'm this close to quitting. I don't seem to find anywhere to go where I don't find monsters that one-shot kill me. I'm just following the critical path, doing shrines along the way. I'm this close to quitting. I don't seem to find anywhere to go where I don't find monsters that one-shot kill me. I'm just following the critical path, doing shrines along the way. Why are there lizards that shoot arrows that can take all my life in one hit and come almost out of nowhere. The game itself lead me to this minotaur thing that can kill me instantly and even of it doesn't (if I take elixirs or whatever) it almost stunlocks me. Stealth doesn't really work because I respawn almost next to the thing, so it detects me instantly. (An besides, it'd be the kind of instant-fail stealth anyway.)

The world is great but it hates me and doesn't want me to play in it.

I think I might suck at this game? I don't feel that I've gone out of my way to obscure corners of the map but monsters are consistently moping the floor with me. And I don't know if I'm underleveled or it's just that I can't manage combat well enough. (I also don't know what "underleveled" would look like since …

And I don't know if I'm underleveled or it's just that I can't manage combat well enough. (I also don't know what "underleveled" would look like since beside getting a camera, I don't feel Link has become any more powerful than at the start of the game.)

As this old lady is recounting me the same story the dead king already told me it dawns on me that this team of level design geniuses might not excel at storytelling.

First impressions:

Wow, I'm glad I didn't played this before playing Sable. That game lifts mechanics, world elements and even UI language directly from BOTW. I don't know if I would've like that game as much as I did if I realised how derivative it was. It pays to be ignorant, kids!

You can see the genious-level game design right away. Things like the way enemies are physically pushed away by some weapons, how they sometimes leave their weapons somewhere else, usw.

It might be because I'm not used to nintendo's conventions, but the sounds effects feel gamey and weirdly dated?

How generic and boring is the story? I'm in the middle of a seemingly endless exposition dump and I couldn't care less about anything on screen and the pompous narration. Mighty kingdom, yada yada, big bad evil, yada yada, chosen one, yada yada, princess... Please, someone release me from this cutscene so I can continue exploring this world!

Boy, am I late to the party.

I liked the game, clearly a 7/10.

Hated the weapon degradation, the horses and the running around searching for the 400,000 deku mascot.

Loved the story: simple but good, the Ancient Beasts, the floating around, the semi-fast travel.

Also: Amiibo sucks.

Also, i miss Oracle of Ages/Seasons.

Started this last night. Not quite ready to put on my playing list yet as I’m experimenting with a way to play games at night, but I’m hoping it works out.

But dang, it feels good to start a Zelda game up again. It’s been to long.

Nintendo just sent me a very extensive survey that I can only describe as market research for the successor to the Switch. If I’m willing to wager, Nintendo is in the early stages (pre-hardware) of development for their next console.

At one point I was asked to pick three things that were important to me in a console. You better believe one of them was backward compatibility. I want the Switch successor to accept Switch cards, and play my Switch library. Having continuity between my PS4 and PS5 is one of the things that makes the generational upgrade more palatable.

While it's nothing like the installments I loved that came before it, it's still so good. It stands out to me as the best in its genre (that being an action-adventure exploration game, with tower climbing and survival elements, you know the one) and when I first played it, the fact that I could play it handheld at all blew my mind. Paragliding off the highest peaks and watching Hyrule come into view below me, or watching the colossal ancient beasts move across the landscape in handheld mode really made me appreciate modern gaming technology.

A ton of fun that can be enjoyed and marveled by all.

Enjoying my time with this game but I lowkey feel unaccomplished game-wise because I’m not progressing the story. Enjoying my time with this game but I lowkey feel unaccomplished game-wise because I’m not progressing the story. I am doing trials and looking for shrines and koroks but I’m not unlocking memories and I’m always running away from big battles (raiding stealthily is fun though). I have no money so I haven’t bought any gear, and I’m surviving on a diet of simmered fruits and stolen roasted meat. Still fun so I’ll keep on doing this, and I’m bound to stumble upon something at some point I guess.
