If I'd had any idea just how closely interconnected Syberia I and II are -- they basically tell one story between the two of them -- I'd have waited until I had completed part II before reviewing them both. The story is obviously quite predictable for this installment, which, oddly enough, didn't detract from its power, at least for me. It's been one week since I finished the game and the plot and characters still stay with me.
On the mechanics side, part II is a lot more enjoyable than part I. Basically, all of the problems mentioned in my review of Syberia 1 have been dealt with. Kate Walker's walk is reasonably speedy, the environments are varied and lively, the puzzles are somewhat more complex and rewarding, and even the dialogue has been made much more concise. Add to that the absolutely gorgeous animal animations (I want a youki!) and the beautiful background art, and you've got an excellent adventure that doesn't just work as a story, but as a game. I'm sure I will replay this some day, perhaps when I'm old and grey and have found (or failed to find) my own personal mammoths?
Really a pretty good sequel. A few too many instances of pixel hunting where logic should have been present. However, the story was excellent. A great end to the saga. Hope there will be more Kate Walker adventures.

The story & dialogue were just good enough to get me through playing the ~6 hours of gameplay. Unfortunately it doesn't stand on its own and is basically an epilogue of Syberia 1, with no twists or surprises or much of interest beyond seeing it to its logical conclusion. And still, the characters and dialogue don't seem like they're in the right decade for the game.
There's a couple of interesting puzzles but, a lot of the mechanical problems from the first game persist: poor movement and pathing ("I thought I couldn't go that way because I kept getting stuck on the invisible snow drift"), poor execution of graphical clues in the environments, too-easy puzzles, and slow/rough loading of scenes. This one even seemed to have more unnecessary running back and forth, and also added some annoying camera-changes during almost every conversation, each one necessitating some jerky load time.
Probably won't play any more of the series.
This is a promising adventure title with lovely settings and visuals that have held up impressively well. The game has some rather charming and creative narrative touches and appealing musical moments. Visually, it evokes an impressive steampunk-style environment; in combination, these elements make for a quite immersive experience.
However, at its core, the Syberia series is sadly limited; the puzzles are humdrum and unsatisfying, and there is little motivation due to a lacklustre, slow-moving plot.

Even though I found the story from the first entry much more moving given the personal transformation of Kate Walker, this game is a great continuation of the first. As a game, I find it to be more solid than the first, with more streamlined gameplay and puzzles that are interesting to solve. The environments are gorgeous and more captivating, and the youki is super cute! A good follow up to the first game that is worth a play.
