XIII is a cel-shaded first-person shooter based on the popular Belgian cult comic created by Jean Van Hamme and illustrated by William Vance. The game is loosely based on the first five comics. The player unravels clues, trying to solve a conspiracy set in an environment that breathes a comic book ambiance. Footsteps and shots are visualized in text and actions: for example, headshots are shown in a series of still images. Aside from that, the game has all the typical FPS elements: both stealth and action, more than fifteen weapons (shotguns, crossbows, rifles, ...), interaction with environmental objects and plenty of enemies in levels spread all over the world. During the game, the player can learn a number of skills such as silent walking, lockpicking and dual weapons handling. Read less

Thank god for console commands

I don't see how any human could manage to defeat The Mongoose without spam healing through console commands. That's certainly what I did.

Anyway, this game was decently cool but it suffered from a lot of bugs. The cutscenes between chapters had no audio. I also found the difficulty a lot at times. Especially when facing the final boss, I …

Anyway, this game was decently cool but it suffered from a lot of bugs. The cutscenes between chapters had no audio. I also found the difficulty a lot at times. Especially when facing the final boss, I really could not ever have beaten him without discovering console commands.

The story Bourne Identity-esque, a secret agent with amnesia has to stop a plot for world domination. I played the original 2003 version on GOG and was surprised to discover that you couldn't use a controller with it. But then, mouse & keyboard is easier for FPS for me.

Great visual style and awesome voice acting make it worth the price of admission, but the shooting feels really dated, and unfair boss fights ruin a lot of the pacing.

Adam West is the only reason to play this

Cel shaded graphics always age well but the clunky FPS mechanics have not. Replayed this purely for the Adam West voice acting which is gold. David Duchovny on the other hand sounds like he's overdosing on Xanax

Not terrible

13 is a fairly standard FPS that only stands out because of its cell-shaded graphics. It's linear, has no non-scoped aiming and overall just isn't that interesting. Walk, shoot, repeat. There's some clunky stealth and item-use but that's it. Average at best by 2003 standards, not worth bothering with in 2021.

Made it to the last boss fight and bailed out there. Not only is a huge difficulty spike, but it's also not fun and it takes more than 30 seconds to get to it from the last checkpoint.

Made it to the last boss fight and bailed out there. Not only is a huge difficulty spike, but it's also not fun and it takes more than 30 seconds to get to it from the last checkpoint.

But the rest of the game is really good. The graphics aged wonderfully and the gameplay is solid. The stealth systems are primitive, but they do break up the pace between shooting-all-in-sight missions. I didn't follow the story at all, but luckily is not really important and cutscenes are few and short.

Not as good as I remembered

I played XIII when it first came out and it blew me away. The cell-shaded style looked great, the story was good, it had some celebrity voice work...well, I tried replaying it recently, and it hasn't aged well. The controls are especially clunky. This is a relic of the past - once good, now just an antique.
