Based on the Russian novel Metro 2033 by Dmitry Glukhovsky, Metro: Last Light is a post-apocalyptic horror first-person shooter that serves as a new chapter in the Metro saga and is the sequel to Metro 2033. Like its predecessor, the game is a primarily story-driven shooter with heavy stealth elements. Artyom may carry up to three weapons at a time, however bullets are scarce and valuable to the point that higher grade bullets are, in fact, the Metro's currency. When dealing with armed opponents, stealth is encouraged and it is wise to save ammunition for the many mutant creatures encountered in combat. In many situations the player can choose between straightforward shooting and stealth, also having the option for lethal or non-lethal enemy takedowns. Read less

The second Metro entry is a FPS that masterfully blends survival horror, stealth, and action in a post-apocalyptic Moscow. Picking up where Metro 2033 left off, it immerses you in the tunnels and ruins of a devastated world, with striking environmental detail, haunting lighting, and a palpable sense of tension at every turn. The game’s story is compelling, driven by morally complex choices that shape its ending, while its characters are surprisingly well-developed for the genre.

Combat is tense and deliberate, rewarding careful planning and resource management, though the game still allows for more action-oriented playstyles. And although using a "stealth x non-stealth" shooter approach at the time was becoming old by the time of this release, this one is masterfully implemented. You have tons of options to approach the "full-stealth" playstyle, and sometimes this is the only viable option, depending on the difficulty level you choose to play this.

You even face a couple of bosses along the way, nothing over the top but they add a nice change of pace from the regular gameplay rythm. While linear in design, the tightly crafted levels and atmospheric storytelling make it a standout experience, particularly for people who appreciate a gripping narrative combined with moments of genuine fear and suspense. The art direction, sound design, and attention to survival mechanics elevate Metro: Last Light beyond a typical shooter into a fully immersive world, this one is a must play for those who like single-player story shooters to any extent.

Not worth the bother...

Wow.. this is just terrible. I had hoped for a better game because it weights higher in ratings than the first ( a game i did not much like overall but was okay) but this is bullshit... Can't open the door? You're going to die from gas... Can't fight enemies for reasons? You're going to bleed out or something.

Absolutely terrible and it boggles my mind how this bullshit weights above a three. This is a nonsensically designed game that never should have seen the light of day and goes against every FPS standard that's been implemented. Weapon swapping is unnecessarily complicated, objectives and interactables are abstract, obstuse and open to interpretation (what were they thinking)

The combat and stealth mechanics are also much improved on the previous game, although fighting certain monsters is still a pain. The game does suffer from some poor A.I and a lifeless main character, as well as some poor objective markers.

Last Light can also look gorgeous at times, especially when you venture above ground. Highly recommended for those who like atmospheric, story driven FPS’ (Half-Life 2, Bioshock etc).

I beat the game, so it deserves at least 4 stars. It was engaging, a little bit buggy. It's probably the weakest Metro game, but since it's a bit easier and more linear it feels more like a movie. The story is not the best, but I would play it again.

Оutstanding sequel (review for Metro: Last Light - Redux macOS-version)

With Metro: Last Light I got pretty much what I expected - Metro 2033, but bigger, prettier and more varied. I'm a long-term fan of post apocalyptic settings, stealth and story driven action games, so I liked that series a lot and looking forward to see what's new in Metro Exodus, but will make some pause. Moreover I doubt that Exodus will run really well on my Mac.

That was my first playthrough of Last Light and my friend who's a fan of the series and completed all Metros multiple times advised me to instantly play on the hardest difficulty and he claimed that the game was developed to play this way and this level of survival that appears with it. Turned out that it's not completely true and he should've told me something more about that. There is no HUD at all which is cool in terms of adding a realism and that you need to check the time on the wrist watch that's left before you need to change the filter of a gas mask, but that's all pros and there are cons:

  1. in most cases you don't know what you're picking up - you just hear a sound that something is picked and that's it;
  2. the only way to know how much ammo you have (except for those that already inside a weapon's magazine) is to open journal (push and hold M, then clic RMB);
  3. you should know beforehand that you're able to knock out foes instead of stabbing them with a knife, because the game usually tells that with a caption, but as I already said - there's no HUD at all; and this affects what ending you'll eventually have;
  4. there are rare QTEs in the game and when that happens... you don't get any notifications that you need to push something; usually I understood that it's QTE after I died and the next time I mashed E and LMB hoping that it'll work.

There's also one possible issue that's unrelated to HUD: there's 2-3 fights when if you don't have guns with extended clips, you'll have really tough time and most probably will need to start over a chapter. And I hope that if that happens, you'll have enough money to buy it. Luckily that friend told me about that before I got in that fights because in the beginning I liked to play stealthy with a silenced revolver.

Aside from that this things the hardest difficulty is really adds to survival-vibe and keeps you on your toes, especially at times when you need to use a gas mask. You need to understand that on this difficulty constant looting is mandatory because you just won't make it without collecting a lot of ammo, filters and money. And when you're short on gas mask filters, you need to loot pretty fast.

I'd recommend to try that ranger survival hardcore difficulty on a second playthrough.

I had a pretty negative experience with this one. It sat in my backlog for five years or so, and when I finally got to it, I think the moment had kind of passed. Metro is a game series that is well regarded by many so I had high expectations that unfortunately were not met. Coming along pretty late in the PS3's lifecycle, it's not a particularly pretty game and doesn't run very well on that hardware either. The dark, stifling atmosphere and linear corridor-based levels all just add up an experience that's (intentionally, I know) claustrophobic and just a bit one-note for my taste. The story goes some weird places for sure, particularly in its bonkers final act and the game isn't totally devoid of positive qualities. I respect all of the mundane gun jamming, air filter replacing, flashlight charging mechanics in a novel hardcore-sim kind of way, despite not actually enjoying them very much. There’s some interesting world-building. Overall, I found some of this compelling enough that I ended up playing Exodus, the next game in the series, which I enjoyed a lot more. If you're in the mood for a dense, drab Russian post-apocalypse narrative that takes place almost entirely underground and exudes the deep existential dread that only things that exist in that specific genre of media fixated on the extended mythology of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and collapse of the Soviet Union, maybe this will be your thing. Even within that subgenre, there are better options though.

Oh no. Oh NO. I, on a whim, looked up some Last Light gameplay because I'm thinking of just bailing on 2033, and...it looks....exactly as shitty as its predecessor. This has been the singular worst purchase I've made on this console lmao I screwed myself so fucking hard, dude. I should've bought a good FPS.

Just finished this over the course of three days and loved every moment of it. Such a fantastic sequel too - about as good as the first game. Excited to play Exodus and I even saw that there's a new one to be announced sometime this year. Even better.

Mainly the artificial intelligence needs lots of work otherwise Metro Last Light with its hybrid of quality action and engaging storytelling would maybe have been one of the best games of the year. What it inherits from the original are often its greatest strengths. It’s the inconsistencies that do it harm. They’re so close to something truly special here, and I’m confident that I'll be enjoying Metro Exodus.

I think I enjoyed this a bit more than the first. Perhaps it was because I was already immersed in the setting? My only real complaint is that they perhaps took away a bit too much of the mystery of the dark ones. I liked the somewhat incomprehensible, mysterious figures they were in the first game.

It's more than just the great writing and sombre performances; it's also the whole aesthetic. Every crevice of the environment, both safe in the Metro and in the surface world, is grimy, and gross, and unclean, in the process of being reclaimed my nature. Not only does 4A Games make you feel as though you've lived in this world your whole life, you also get the impression that humans really belong here anymore. Mutants are easily the most dominant species at this point, and I almost feel bad every time I have to down a Demon or a Lurker, since they're simply defending their territory. We have no right to be there, and yet we stumble into their patch and open fire. It's a very specific feeling, the likes of which I've only really ever felt in Dark Souls (haha yes funny meme dark souls comparison). I hope I'll finish this game soon because I'm impressed so far.
