Metro 2033 is a first-person shooter with survival horror elements, based on the Russian book of the same name by Dmitry Glukhovsky. Most of the game takes place underground, but several times Artyom will have to venture outside, into the perpetual nuclear winter. Game progression is fairly linear, though areas may be explored more thoroughly for items and ammunition. Setpieces include a few on-rails sequences, missions that involve defending a location from an onslaught of monsters, and others. A few stages can be completed in a stealthy fashion.

I'm trying. I'm over halfway. It's so painful, but god I'm trying. I don't know if I'll make it. So far below is a very succinct list of just a handful of things wrong with this terrible piece of crap.

I'm trying. I'm over halfway. It's so painful, but god I'm trying. I don't know if I'll make it. So far below is a very succinct list of just a handful of things wrong with this terrible piece of crap.
- literal core mechanics never explained: never tells you how to swap secondary weapons, how many filters you have or what the number on filters mean, what the battery charger does or what the batteries proper are for, among literally a dozen others
- absolutely directionless with the most uninspired empty world and zero secondary characters
- most clunky gunplay ever in a game with guns
- atrocious and almost unusable UI
- many times, health kits will do absolutely nothing, and within a matter of seconds of using one, whether you've been attacked or not, you're right back down to negative health and on the brink of death
- literally no plot. none. at all. whatsoever. a never ending escort/errand boy mission list and absolutely no reason to get invested and nobody worth getting invested in
- the most generic enemies of all time, almost on the level of asset flipping
- completely underutilized lead VA who, for some reason, reads the text in between loading screens, then never responds to anyone or says anything within the game proper
- so many visual effects (smoke, smoke, bloom from lights, etc) that it's often outright impossible to see anything around you
And that's just off the top of my head. I'm sure I could cobble together an even more comprehensive list later. I hate bailing on stuff, I really do, but this...this might just beat me. This might just be one of those very rare games that is so unplayably bad that I can't even complete it. We shall see. Only time can tell.

Like, holy fuck dude, even the one thing this game could've maybe done alright - the railway fight on the machine gun in Chapter 4 - is also somehow unplayable. How do you fuck THAT up? lmao Bloom effects so badly that you can't even tell where you're aiming, what you're looking at or who's shooting you. This is AMAZING. …

I don't think I've ever, in my life, come across a game this bad on all fronts.
New Vegas finally has some competition for the worst game I've ever played.

Still a solid FPS with interesting story.
