What a janky Metroidvania game. Clunky movement, platforming and combat made this a very frustrating playthrough. I actually didn't mind the insta-death spikes, what upset me was most of the time falling on the spikes was due to the jank in the controls and animation (and ladders!). The bosses being able to spam attacks while the super slow character recover animation prevents you from doing anything is just insane. And a pet peeve of mine is when games have reaction animation when your character gets hit but not when the bosses get hit ("Oh, that energy blast to the face just doesn't affect him at all, huh? He can even attack me through it? Okay...")

And the backtracking...so much backtracking. And the non-puzzle puzzles. And all the essential character abilities and items locked behind random hidden walls. I never watch walkthrough videos or read guides but I eventually had to just to progress in the game.

I see this was originally an indie game backed by Kickstarter pledges so I can cut it a bit of slack, but it was so highly recommended by MV players I had to try it at least.

I'm a sucker for the genre so of course I bought part 2 while it was on sale and will play that eventually. I see that one is considered the far better game, fixing many of the issues players had with the original. Probably wasn't a good idea to play this one immediately after Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.

I've wanted to write about the religious symbolism, art and references in Blasphemous since it came out, specially in reference to the 'Semana Santa'. I know other have done the same, but I really wanted to do it... and my editor finally gave me the greenlight.

Here's the article in spanish.

enter image description here

I know is not an exhaustive list of references, but that's not really what I wanted to do.

I like the art and the feel of the World. The gameplay is good too, but it lacks a certain je ne sais quoi that other metroidvanias tend to have. I'm satisfied with the game, but I wouldn't play it more than once.

This game kicks fucking ass and that's really all I have to say. Just excellent across the board in every conceivable way. Nary a complain among me.

Blasphemous is an excellent title. The art style is just gorgeous without being cringelord levels of edgy, and the catholic imagery is really visually interesting. I was afraid, admittedly, when I heard about the "Dark Souls" style save points, but it really - as someone pointed out - isn't nearly as bullshit as that is, and it's very fair. It's just overall a truly fun game with some very interesting concepts and I'm glad to have gotten it for the 7 dollars I paid.

I thought it might be fun to try out this game due its unique aesthetic and the fact I usually quite enjoy metroidvanias. Just wasn't for me. The first couple hours were kinda dull and neither gameplay nor the story really clicked with me. Oh well.

Discovered a really cool hidden room in this game.

You are in a museum part of the game and if you slash at the wall, you can enter this room by doing the slide. In the room, there are paintings of many popular indie titles including Shovel Knight, Rime, Crossing Souls, Severed, UnEpic, Maldita Castilla and Overcooked.

For a game as dark and serious as this one is, it was a nice Easter egg and light hearted break, even if it does absolutely nothing to the game itself.

Beat during free trial on xbox gold. Nice of them to offer a free trial of longer duration than the game. I put my first skill into power attack and found that useful for the slow enemies carrying statues, and killed others with timed parries. I proceeded underground to kill the first boss, which took a few tries to figure out. Then rather than continue on into the cistern I decided to go up into the snowy mountains. That place was a pain and I died a lot due to platforming fails. Most of my deaths in the game were from falls. I struggled severely with the boss and his bullet hell attacks. I really felt I should have gone the other way to find more upgrades and considered giving up to do just that, but the idea of climbing up again.... no. After maybe a dozen or more attempts I finally beat the bastard. Then I went back underground and onward to the 3 witches boss, who I owned with a single try despite messing up and getting hit often. Yes, definitely should have done them in the other order. By this point I was using defense trinkets for physical, toxic, fire, magic, and lightning damage, depending on what the enemy was doing. I would also micromanage the health boost trinket at rest and take it off when I lost that hp. My sword heart was the one that boosted damage at low hp because it was the only one without a penalty. For magic I used the rotating orb shield, because it said it can block projectiles, or the attack speed increase.

Next the boss with the great mace, who was tough and took several tries. It was about knowing when to dodge or jump, and attacking from behind. Got through the next areas and bosses without too much trouble, though of course there were some frustrating platforming bits. The worm boss took 2 tries because I did not realize getting grabbed by the giant baby was instant death. Otherwise it felt like all my defense, resists and healing allowed me to not worry about taking hits. The undead bishop only took 1 try and I got good use out of the attack speed magic. The fire boss took 3 or 4 tries, but the 1st try didn't really count because I was unprepared with only 1 healing potion. He was not too difficult once his pattern was learned, and this was the only boss where I found use for the ranged attack. Then off to the end of the game. Sword missy took quite a few tries. I got her by equipping the trinket that reduces dodge cooldown; attack from front to break her guard then quickly dodge behind to hit once, then quickly dodge again to hit her after she turned. Keep up aggressive attacks and frequent dodges. The main trouble was her specials. Then I attempted the final boss without trying too hard because I knew there was a ton of stuff I missed. Just from observing the places I could not reach I knew there were powerups for jumping in water, falling from height, those swirly intangible platforms, and maybe a grappling hook or something for those knobby things. But where are all these things? Checked a walkthrough. Ok there was a background door in the very beginning for that key I purchased. Then I completed the sidequests to unlock all of these powers and methodically returned to each area to look for missed stuff. I used a walkthrough to find most of the stuff I missed, did all but 1 confessor arena, beat the final boss for the bad ending then again for the good ending. The life steal on kill sword ability was amazing for normal enemies, but obviously useless for bosses. For my 1st real attempt on the final boss I used the berserker sword ability, reasoning that the lowered defense only applied to physical; it did not, so back to the attack boost at low hp. I did not bother to use any magic or fancy moves; just jumping around and quick attacks. For trinkets I used: move speed, attack, and 6 of the best defense items for each type of damage. I did not see the need to micromanage trinkets to optimize for particular spells or for faster/invulnerable use of the healing potions.

By the end I had about 90% complete. I had all the healing potions upgraded 3 times. I had another quicksilver to upgrade them again but did not think losing another potion was worth it. I had all the trinket slots and maxed hp, but missed 1 mana upgrade. I did not have all trinkets, relics, sword hearts or prayers, but saw no need to track them down. I upgraded my sword for every move except the 2 alternate 4th hit combos. I still mostly used regular quick attacks, but the dodge lunge, heavy charge attack with range, and area drop down into the ground, were great abilities for certain situations. I found 2 of the stained glass flower areas, but they were timed platforming crap. I see no point to buy the game now, nor any need to get the stuff I missed. But I might play more and try new game+ and the boss gauntlet mode if the game ever goes free on xbox gold or has another free trial.

I enjoyed the game, mostly for scratching that metroidvania itch. Loved the nostalgic map style and obvious secrets to come back for after getting the correct new ability. Being able to customize the map with my own pins was awesome, but I did not realize it until late game and thus missed a lot of the potential. That should have been in a tutorial. The combat was great; felt tight, impactful and skill based. Loved the brutal gore executions. I even learned new tricks while backtracking and fighting old enemies again. The Dark Souls bonfire system worked really well. I liked how they and the many shortcuts broke the game up into bite sized challenges, and the enemies not respawning just from changing screen. Some bosses were brutal and definitely designed to be failed repeatedly until mastering their moves. But what caused me the most swearing was the instant death platforming. While far from the most difficult platforming out there, there were some truly frustrating sequences that combined enemies and instant death platforming. I really felt there needed to be a relic that caused you to only lose hp from spikes and pits, rather than die. The heavy dark Christian themes and setting of the world were fascinating but the actual narrative was weak. While I understood more or less what was going on, the dialogue felt like it was trying too hard to tick off interesting words in the thesaurus rather than being an engaging story.

7.8/10

The lapsed Catholic inside of me loves how gothic and dark this game is. It might not be as excellent as Ori or Hollow Knight, but overall it's been a great game thus far.

I decided to revisit Blasphemous because they've added some new content since the time I played it originally: NG+, Spanish voice acting, and DLC. Also, there's a native linux version now!

It's every bit as good as I remember. Awesome game.

On reaching Albero, I was surprised to find that the game now has a pettable dog, too:

Frustrating and irrational

As a fan of Castlevania games, I really wanted to like Blasphemous. And first half of the game was quite enjoyable. As a fan of Castlevania games, I really wanted to like Blasphemous. And first half of the game was quite enjoyable. I mean, the pixel art is beautiful, animations are great, bosses are big and interesting. But the further you progress, the more irrational the game becomes. If you're playing with a guide, then that shouldn't be a problem.
But if you're like me, and enjoying playing those games without a walkthrough by your side, then Blasphemous is more frustrating than fun.
Quite early in the game you'll see some tree branches that look like you could grapple to them, if you had a grappling hook. Later on, you'll meet a guy that's slowly turning into a tree. So it makes a lot of sense that the tree-guy will be the one that provides you with a mean to attach yourself to branches. But no, he provides you with an amulet that boosts your defences. And to interact with branches, you need to provide three items to a hairy egg. Which three items? First one is something related to a bride, third one is something related to a widow. So, what's the middle one?
Of course those are melted coins! Because what's between a widow and a bride? Melted coins! Totally rational, right? And that's only one example. Wait until you'll try to jump in the swamp. You'll have a lot of fun, I'm sure of it.
But wait, why am I even complaining about that? Aren't those items supposed just, you know, help you, but you could totally beat the game without them? Well, wait until you reach last pair of bosses. Good luck beating them with Pelican Effigy, which, you guessed right, hidden behind one of those branches. And there's absolutely no way of knowing that. Those are the same two bosses that have broken frames (hit you even it looks like she missed) or telegraph a deadly attack where you cannot see it.
That's not to mention that to get the best ending, you'll have to read through another set of irrational challenges. But at least those aren't broken, thank the Father and the Miracle.
