How far do you value 'ambition' when it comes to how objectively good a title is?
I'm watching a Worst PS1 games video where, for certainly the worse in my mind, the presenter continues to excuse lacking quality under the guise of 'being different' 'experimenting' or 'having spirit'.

I'm watching a Worst PS1 games video where, for certainly the worse in my mind, the presenter continues to excuse lacking quality under the guise of 'being different' 'experimenting' or 'having spirit'.
I think all of these things are valuable, but I also think there are games that manage to be the above AND good, or just plain good without having the above, and it's really too much of an ask for everyone to be so read up on wa-re history with games to be able to bump up GTA 1 just because it compared well to other games that happen to have been released at that time. Ultimately, when you're playing, that year-date may as well be hot pressed onto the title for as much effect as it has on your brain.
Ignore the inconvenient fact that I consider the gen 1 pokemon games to be fairly good, involving some of the above reasons, I can't say I am 100% consistent on this.

In about 2 hours (8PM Central), I will be starting Pokemon Yellow on stream! Been years since I played it! Not necessarily going for 100% but at least want to get the main challenges done. Should be fun. Tune in if you'd like https://www.twitch.tv/instazome1234

Started playing this on a whim, wanted to retro game and get a nostalgia blast. It's amazing how much the core of this game still holds up. I have been slowly replaying thru this game. To up the challenge level I decided to play this as a Nuzlocke, where Pokemon knocked out, count as dead and must be released, and I can only capture the first Pokemon I meet in a zone, if it's a repeat I can catch the next one until I encounter a new …

To up the challenge level I decided to play this as a Nuzlocke, where Pokemon knocked out, count as dead and must be released, and I can only capture the first Pokemon I meet in a zone, if it's a repeat I can catch the next one until I encounter a new Pokemon.
I love the music in this game, and some of the areas are extremely fun. Currently I am fighting my way thru for my 4th badge, and have a fairly balanced team, though I have some Pokemon I also wouldn't mind replacing.
A few thoughts on this game, after playing newer generations, the variation in Pokemon, when there are only 150 available, is pretty lackluster early on. Several zones have had nothing new or exciting for me, taking some of the fun of exploration away.
The balance of the game is also wonky, with much needed improvements added in later generations. The psychic type is completely overpowered, and the frequency many Pokemon learn new moves is very VERY slow.
That being said I am enjoying my play thru and love this walk down nostalgia lane.

Oh God! Tried to complete the Pokedex, but it's just too much work! There too many other games to play, so it's time to move on. I will get the missing Pokemon in the other versions. Still can't believe I spent over 120 hours playing Pokemon. Didn't know I liked it so much!

Wohoo!! I did see the credits after beating the elite 4. I have far from a complete Pokédex, but this is a great first step on my Pokémon adventure.

I am tempted to get a Mew from the game, but I think I will wait until I can someday, maybe, get one legitimately.
So right now this is in the, "Finished but not 100%" category!

Elite 4 and Champion beaten, Mewtwo captured, currently completing pokedex (for the first time).
