I decided to give Golvellius on the Master System a try last night. Was just planning to play 5 min and see what a terrible Zelda clone it was. 2 hours later I was really enjoying it! Honestly, this is better than Zelda 1 for the NES, though they have very different formulas, and it came out just over a year after Zelda. Golvellius is much more accessible. Zelda 1 you'd be hard pressed to beat without a guide or hours upon hours of trial and error, whereas Golvellius is streamlined and relatively linear by comparison. Each new area does need to be explored and there are lots of monsters to fight and gold to grind, but it goes quick and before you know it you'll be making progress. The graphics and music are good for the era and there is a lot of variety to the areas and enemies. Plus the platforming and shooting sections that mix things up are welcome. Unlike in Zelda, enemies spawn constantly and you'll be taking damage frequently, luckily heals are usually easy to find around the map. You don't have to spend 10-20 min running around just to get a single healing potion like in Zelda. IMHO this is the better game. But, it is a shame we never got a sequel, while the Zelda series improved through many excellent sequels.
Plus, you get savagely insulted by grannies in this game.
