Well, this is the one that put my Street Fighter arcade mode journey on ice. For now, at least.
The American version of SSF2T has a notorious bug that causes difficulty selection to be ignored, and it always runs at the highest difficulty setting. For a fledgling fighter like me, it's too much to handle, even with save states. I ended up grabbing a rom of the Japanese version and playing it on the easiest difficulty, which I found still difficult but manageable. I did accomplish my goal of fighting Akuma (through heavy save-state use), but even on the easiest difficulty, he was a brick wall. I suppose that's the point, he's the absolute hardest character possible in the SF2 series. And anyway, my curiosity has been sated. I did enjoy seeing him in action, a proper fighting game super-boss teleporting all over the screen and throwing fireballs at odd angles. Must have blown peoples' minds back in the arcades.
Oddly, I find my desire to play arcade modes for the rest of the series much diminished now. I was originally playing this to lead up to returning to Street Fighter V, but I think I'm just going to free myself from that responsibility and hop back in today. I might still return to the rest of the SF catalogue in the future, but I'm not as interested at the moment.
