Thank you Game Pass Lords. I'm on chapter 4 so far and this is an absolute blast. I swear the characters bickering and commenting on your exploration is the best part about this.

Listen, when most people [myself included] saw that Square Enix was coming out with another Marvel game, I think it was eye-roll inducing. But man, developers Eidos-Montreal really knocked Guardians of the Galaxy out of the park.

I'm still playing through on XB1 but I didn't think I'd be this blown away by a Marvel game, as huge a fan I am. I was also skeptical about the "you can only play as Star-Lord" aspect, but even that cleared expectations. The way that Star-Lord interacts in combat and the environment with his Guardians team is phenomenally useful and immersive.
Graphically, it's beautiful to look at, both cutscenes and gameplay. The voice work among the cast is spot-on. It works much better distancing itself from the MCU versions of these characters than the Avengers game did with theirs. These characters feel like off-shoots of the movies but also different enough to enjoy it as a standalone.
I'm seriously hoping a sequel gets made, and I'm only about halfway through the story!

Dog Report Item: this game really captures the weirdness of Marvel comics. Aside from Marvel’s Spider-Man, which I think does a pretty good job portraying the webslinger, this might be the first time I really feel like I’m playing a comic book story. This game might not have very compelling moment-to-moment gameplay but it manages to do something that none …

This game might not have very compelling moment-to-moment gameplay but it manages to do something that none of the MCU films have: it made me feel like a kid reading things like X-Men with its bonkers stories that somehow contain surprisingly grounded superheroes. Eidos Montreal has managed something here that is really enjoyable to partake in from a story and character perspective, and reminds me that Marvel adaptations don’t have to be corporate paint by numbers media objects. They can still have heart.

Dog Report Item: I really enjoy the team dynamic of the characters in this game and appreciate that unlike the MCU version there doesn’t seem to be a push to force in heteronormative pairings, like that of Gamora and Quill in the films. It’s as if the writers actually recognize that platonic relationships are real.

Dog Report Item: as much as I really enjoy the MCU portrayal of Drax, especially the humour inherent to the character; I think I vastly prefer his portrayal in this game. The Canadianess of the voice acting in this game is very, very Canadian.
I also enjoy that despite Square-Enix’s claim that the game is based on the comics and not the movies, Rocket’s voice actor was clearly given the direction to impersonate Bradley Cooper.

I haven't laughed this much with a video game since Portal 2. The writing is really great.

Not being open world just means it kinda goes and goes, and I had trouble getting to a good stopping point last night as a result. The last chapter I finished was a lot in both combat and story, so I'm taking a day or two off the game to not wear myself out on it.
Still it's really good, in some ways even better than Spider-Man: Miles Morales if we're talking excellent AAA superhero titles of recent times. I'll prefer it overall to those Spider-Man games if it holds up until the end. You'll definitely see this on my GOTY list.
I keep seeing comparisons between this and Mass Effect. This is not as much of an RPG, but you can see that inspiration clearly. It makes me consider what I would even want out of a new standalone Mass Effect, and if it looked more like this in tone, storytelling, party interactions, even some of the combat which thankfully is not cover-based... I would be very into that.
