A love letter to life. Truly one of the most heartwarming games I have played in my whole stupid life.

While it isn't the only emotion elicited by good art, I often use "if I cried" as a litmus test for if a work is powerful. Video games that have had me shed a tear are few and far between. Final Fantasy 15. Celeste... I really can't think of too many. But this game had me crying at several sections. It is just so overwhelmingly true and personal. I clenched my chest. I clenched it!

But an emotional response is only part of appreciating an interactive piece of art. I haven't at all touched on the interaction. It's great! I Am Dead is like a 3D explorable Where's Waldo. And it exhausts every opportunity presented by that idea.

  • Find the person.
  • Find the thing.
  • What in the diorama looks like this?
  • What can be made to look like this?

And if any of that sounds a bit too obtuse for you, the game generously makes most of its content optional! I did most of it because I was having a blast, but you could speed run this game finding like 30% of what it has hidden.

I am literally writing this review to convince you to play this game. I love it so. What do I need to say in order for you to play it? I'll tell you whatever lie you need to hear to get you to play it. It's just an immense shame it doesn't have more attention. You should play it. Please play it.
