In Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin, players take on the role of Sakuna, a proud yet lonely harvest goddess who is banished to a dangerous island with a group of outcast humans. Sakuna tames the island by defeating demons using farm tools as weapons while also making ample use of her “celestial scarf,” a magical item that allows her to grapple distant enemies and platforms. Along the way, she establishes a home in a mountain village, which serves as a base of operations for crafting weapons and cooking food. Additionally, as a harvest goddess, she grows rice by following a detailed process that encompasses everything from planting to harvesting. Through this process, across each of the four seasons, she’s able to improve the harvest and hone her battle skills alike. Read less

I really like certain aspects of this game, but if I’m being honest with myself, I kind of hate the farming mechanics. The toolset seems to be about the most finicky I’ve ever used in a game with farming elements, and it’s kind of making the rest of the game a drag.

I wonder if I’d like this. I’ve always found it intriguing, but not enough to take the plunge. I picked it up on the Steam Sale yesterday because I’m enjoying Harvestella and Sakuna looks like a different enough take that I might enjoy it. The side scrolling combat element is very appealing. Soo the physical copy of this game comes with a manual which is just adorable and a huge plus right from the start. Mechanics-wise some UI elements act a little goofy especially when trying to do arduous tasks like planting seeds, but otherwise it's been fun and unique pairing 2D action combat segments with farm management in 3D.

Really wanted to love this game. I love the story and the art and the detailed culture nods in ingredients, weapons, and enemies. It has a lot of charm. But it is so very tedious. I really struggle to motivate myself when the playtime is 75% sun is setting, time to go home, walk up the path to the rice field, talk to npc, eat dinner, sleep, follow prompts, gather and garden and only 25% exploring/battling.

I have tried to pick it up again each time i finish another game, but it doesn't take long before I set it aside again in favor of games that don't make think about all of the more productive things I could be doing.

Main Story finished. Pretty solid game, fun and original, with great soundtrack and charming characters.

I'll get the Platinum for this one. (I don't use to get it)

Started today.

After a first play (2 and half hours) I can say this looks really really promising.

Slow starter and has some combat mechanics that took getting used to, but once that gameplay loop took hold I was having a blast. Loved how much it got into the specifics of rice farming. You aren't planting other stuff... you aren't managing huge plots of land.. here is ONE small plot to master growing JUST RICE. There's so many steps and the stat bonuses for doing it well are generous and rewarding. You can get by just farming forever until your overpowered, but there is ridiculous depth there if you want to get into it. Story didn't blow me away but its above average. Good times.

Finished the game just as planned. I really liked it but I have mixed feelings about the way it ended. I found the final battle quite difficult, and I think it took me almost two hours to win. It made me sad that Myrthe, Kinta, and Kaimaru went back to the Lowly Realm after everything but well, it's really their choice. Reading on the internet I think I missed a bunch of cut scenes and side quests, and I never got to use the water mill that was built so I'm going to play a bit more and farm some rice.

I feel like I'm missing understanding of some of their lore and the game mechanics but I'm surviving so far, and currently, I do not want to worry about it. I wish I could plant rice uniformly more easier but I think I should be more concerned with my tilling skills and figuring out fertilizers.

I just checked the average completion time and it looks like it sits around 30 hours. I'm not sure how long I've been playing but most likely less than 10 hours. I don't know if I can do this for another 20 hours unless something wild changes in the gameplay. Not with a glowing PS5 and The Last of Us …

I got a PS5 and compared to some of the titles I've been able to play, this has taken a bit of a backseat! It's a fun game, but the constant day/night rushing around takes some of the fun out of grinding through enemies. I almost wish the days were.. a bit longer, maybe? It seems like I never have enough time to do anything, which is hitting a little too close to home at the moment, with a newborn.

I'm a bit disappointed at how little this game is grabbing me currently. I started playing The Last of Us recently and I am constantly thinking about playing it. In fact I played TLoU for almost 3 straight hours the other night, not realizing I stayed up way too late. That literally has not happened to me playing a game for hours straight in probably, 5-10 years?

It almost feels like I was making myself play Sakuna in comparison to how I felt with some of these PS4/PS5 games I'm checking out for the first time. Maybe it's the allure of the shiny new toy in the room.
