Really addicting RPG with great art style, but annoying leveling system

I got this game from the recent Humble RPG Bundle.

I have to say I really did love this game. I couldn't stop playing, never got bored of it or so frustrated I wanted to stop playing which I experience with a lot of games, leading them to rot in my Steam library. The comic-book art style is great - I initially thought the comic-frame attack animations would be annoying but they were timed perfectly so that they weren't drawn out enough to be irritating (plus you can click to speed them up).

I have to say i wasn't sooo invested in the story but it wasn't terrible and I enjoyed some of the characters and humor thrown in so I won't fault it, as this is mostly a matter of personal preference. Without spoiling it, I did find the ending very satisfying.

I think my favorite part of the game was the weapons and moves systems - there were a few main categories of weapons and correlating mods with so many variations in individual weapons and mods bought or picked up throughout that I was excited any time I came across one so I could micromanage which stats and …

I think my favorite part of the game was the weapons and moves systems - there were a few main categories of weapons and correlating mods with so many variations in individual weapons and mods bought or picked up throughout that I was excited any time I came across one so I could micromanage which stats and abilities to equip my team with. It was very satisfying coming up with the right configuration of weapons, tools and mods that perfectly balanced power, defense and cooperation between teammates.

This is necessary, as I found the leveling system in this game annoying and lackluster. Your level maxes out at 10 - after that any experience you get from battles basically flies out the window because you can't strengthen your characters anymore. (And it's pretty easy to max out long before the end of the game, I might add.) Even more irritating is that once you reach level 10, you can't get any more ability points to buy and level up skills on your ability tree, even though many more skills/levels are left unbought. If I had known that starting out I would have made different choices, and basically if you do know that you might want to save up your ability points to buy skills that unlock at higher levels, which personally goes against all my gaming instincts, I just want to spend them right away lol.

The fun weapons/tools/mods system kind of makes up for this though since once your base level maxes out, your ability to strengthen and improve you team relies on finding the right configuration, for which there are endless possibilities.

Other notes: there is a contracts feature in the game where you get some money for finding certain people and collecting certain items but there are so few of these contracts throughout the game they're basically pointless and you're better off just picking up a bunch of sh*t along the way and selling it as a way to make money. There's also an option to hire different teammates of different classes etc. but since you're limited to the same team size the whole time (as far as I know) I personally was fine with the team I started out with and never hired new members.

Overall I did really enjoy the game, even with its faults. More accurately I would probably give it somewhere around 4.5 stars. It's definitely worth picking up the Humble Bundle (first price tier) while it's still available.
