I haven't played a Street Fighter game since II:Turbo on the SNES back in the day. Oh wait, Alpha 3 on the GBA was great too. But I need to catch up on some fighting games and this was free some months back. The UI, menu and customisation is all very well done, I can really see how you would get hooked to SFVs competitive scene, even if I personally only played a few games online and then focused on the story mode.

All the classic characters are here, and a bunch of new ones, to me anyway. The graphic style in this is more cartoony but still looks and feels great, and stays true to the franchise. People are so insane at this, it's hard to compete online, but it is fun to go a few matches. Even more fun with friend that you know! I'm gonna check out SF4 later, that looks interesting aw. 3/5

Polished 5th Entry in the Street Fighter Franchise

Pros

  • Not a massive jump from casual to competitive (as you would think)
  • Decent online servers
  • Missions and extra modes are lots of fun

Cons

  • You have to get Arcade Edition to play Arcade Mode
  • Unfairly hard to get enough Fight Money for new characters
  • Combat can seem stiff (unless you put in the time to learn combos which can …

This is a fighting game and what is it that makes fighting games cool? Its roster of characters (just look at Smash). So the bare minimum the game could do is have a good roster right? Well, good luck with this game and its greediness, almost every single character is purchasable. What in the world is this? Why pay for the game if you only get a few characters and have to buy the rest? A scam. Games have gotten really brave lately with these tactics to scam the consumers with excessive DLC and in-game purchases. I am not a fan and it made the game worse for it. What was really the icing on the top was the amount of fanservice material in this game, the costumes for the women were quite interesting, to say the least.

In addition, the loading screen are insufferable, how can a game that is not that old have loading screen problems still, and a fighting game at that, yikes.

On the positive side, the characters had cool designs and the gameplay was not that bad, but everything surrounding it made it a headache. I had to search for the story mode in the store and download it outside of the game, who does that? In a state of perplex with this one... Fighting games might not be my thing after all.

Even with the addition of the new Arcade Edition. Street Fighter V is by far the worst Street Fighter since the original. The amount of microtransactions and just anti-customer behavior by Capcom with dealing with this game since it's life began without a Story Mode or an Arcade Mode is simply astounding. And while most of the mechanics of the game were descent when the game launched and have been slightly improved since. Everything from the business model to many of the character designs are just subpar. I've played a lot of this Street Fighter because my friends liked playing it and I was really trying make an effort to do so as well. But in the end, I just gave up. I'm done, at least until Street Fighter 6. If that ever happens.

It's shameful that the single-player experience is so terrible. It's shameful that the single-player experience is so terrible. Bite-sized story modes, a lame tutorial and a survival mode where you keep fighting and use supplements to give you boosts after each fight is all that's there. It's meant for the online experience which is great. More will be coming, but as of writing this it's lame.

But the fighting mechanics are sound and the V-System adds a fun dynamic that puts more emphasis on intelligence and psychological warfare than simply memorizing the best combos. Street Fighter is still top of its class. I was originally going to give this a 7 but it's such a great game when you're actually fighting that I need to give it an 8.
