Thank God for Game Rentals

The year was 2006. I had just turned ten, my brother was eight. We were gaming buddies through the entire run of our ownership of PlayStation 2 that dated back to when we were six and four, respectively. Even on single-player games, our collaboration was a must; he was the more hotheaded button-mashing bruiser, while I was relaxed and methodical in my approach, more often the brains behind our duo as I solved all the puzzles with all the finesse a hyperactive but somewhat jaded fifth grader could manage.
We’d just seen the Eragon movie in the theater. Was it the greatest fantasy film? Well no, not exactly... it was not the best of the fantasy stories we’d been exposed to. I think it was serviceable enough, though. My younger brother was captivated by the fantasy monsters and fights where I was more impressed by the quiet badassery of Jeremy Irons as Brom and delighted by the concept of sharing a bond with a dragon such as Saphira. It hyped us up enough for the game to be our rental pick when our folks decided to rent a movie.
It feels exactly like what it is — a game that was hastily and lazily thrown together to turn a profit off of a recent film release. It failed to challenge or impress the 10-year-old and 8-year-old who played it together in any form; in fact, not once did either of us desire to replay what we’d both already chugged through. All in all, an unremarkable and unmemorable experience that failed to impress two elementary schoolers.
