The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay is still a very good game and it’s quite modern. Part adventure, part immersive sim, part (a very small part) FPS, it’s full of ideas, it’s got some nice mechanics that use the IP really well and it’s still good looking (to be fair: I played the 2009 remake). Apart from Vin Diesel’s bizarre delivery, the cast is quite good and the plot is not bad and not too stuck into fan service. The best part is the prison hub with all its missions and its freedom of movement and approach, but the whole game is really fun and constantly reinventing itself until the end. Which comes at the right time. Nice! The fact that such a good, celebrated and moderately recent game can basically only be played via piracy is everything you need to know about video games preservation.

Assault on Dark Athena normalizes and kinda betrays Escape From Butcher Bay and Riddick himself by being more of a traditional FPS and much less versatile in terms of gameplay. That being said, it’s also more modern and polished and overall a good game, with many nice ideas in terms of level design and set pieces, so I didn’t fully love it but I had fun with it. Also, it’s much closer to the movies in terms of overall vibes and plot, with some really effective plot twists. The unintentional comedy award goes to Riddick talking too much both in voiceover and in dialogues: he speaks in such a crazy way and people answer him like it’s a normal thing. I really laughed a lot with that. Anyway, I liked it less but I still liked it.

A cool sequel to a cool game! It has everything: a cool hero, dynamic and diverse gameplay, an interesting plot with an exciting story, charismatic characters, dramatic moments, excellent graphics, fantastic battles, and stealth. Unlike the previous part, this one is shorter but very intense and exciting. The story keeps you enthralled from the beginning to the very end. The characters are really well written and voiced. The cinematography of the game is top-notch. The gameplay here is also varied and allows you to feel like an invisible super-killer, and take control of various equipment and even undead combat androids. Battles with some bosses make you think and allow you to deal with them in different ways. Graphically, the game has received some improvements and looks great. The soundtrack is not worse than in the previous part. This game definitely deserves attention.

Almost Mediocre

Intro

Riddick 2 is a linear FPS with stealth sections.

The Good

The game is very similar to Riddick 1, with some improvements. Maps are less of a maze. You don't have to walk around for hours armed with only a shiv. Stealth is far more often a viable option as well.

The Bad

Riddick 2 has many of the same flaws as the first game, most notably the lack of variation in combat and the absence of an interactive map (a detailed map that shows your location). Just read my review for that game for more details.

In addition this game also has a terrible climbing section where the third-person climbing camera constantly disorients you, which is made worse by the fact you stop climbing when an enemy hits you.

Riddick 2 also features several terrible melee boss battles. I lost these several times until i realised you can't win them by timing your attacks and blocks. Instead you just have to spam the attack button and hope for the best. :-/

Another huge flaw are the drone turrets. Unlike every other enemy these are hard to spot, have pinpoint accuracy and quickly deplete your health - even on Easy difficulty.

Conclusion

While Riddick 2 is a step in the right direction and more playable than Riddick 1, it's still a subpar game. Especially considering this was released in 2009. This was released after far more superior games like Bioshock, Half-Life 2: Episode 1 & 2 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl.

The Chronicles of Riddick hasn't aged well. It's a "stealth" game. The problem is, it's nearly impossible to remain stealth. Guards will see you when the mechanics are telling you you're hidden, and sometimes they'll walk right by you when they should see you (the latter being very rare, but still happening). The game nearly forces you to run-n-gun it through, but the gun mechanics are, too, showing their age.

The sound design is fantastic, with the clanking of distant machinery and echoing gunshots of background firefights not concerning Riddick. The music is alright, but never seems memorable. As far as performances, Vin Deisel is, well, Vin Deisel. He's not the worst, but he's never great. The writing is a little cheesy (specifically in how absolutely serious Riddick is at all times), but mainly just for Riddick. Side characters seem fine.

There are virtually no side quests, so we're talking about a pretty linear experience, here. The look-alike corridors of the Dark Athena are going to be where the bulk of your time is spent. Being lost in them, that is. There's no map and too much of the game looks the same.

Assault on Dark Athena has an awesome, grimy, and mechanical setting marred by sub-par gameplay. The setting does begin to wear its welcome out, but I still think that the aesthetic is cool. There's always going to be a soft spot in my heart for grimy space stations. There are some good looking sets, and the collectibles allow you to view some nice gritty sci-fi concept art, but overall it's metal grating and wires.

I wouldn't really recommend this game unless you played the original Escape from Butcher Bay and absolutely loved it. Remember, though, that the mechanics have aged. I was in love with the original at one point, and now I'm glad that upon completing AoDA I'll never have to touch it again.
