Remake of Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord
2.75 average rating based on 4 ratings
Judging this game as a remake of the 1981 original rather than on the standards that the original set, this is pretty good. It was damn frustrating in the ways that it constantly clawed back your progress with level drains and insta-kill attacks of your characters but that was feature in the original. This game kept that frustration but 1) offered modern graphics that added a level of fun and 2) allows saves to be copied so you can effectively reload an old save if you suddenly permanently lost the character you'd spent hours leveling up.
In the end, I beat Werdna but even that took 4 reloads because the entire battle was dependent on luck, from the number of enemies appearing to the initiative order in combat.
It's probably more worth it if you want to experience an old game updated than for its pure fun value.
It's not that this game is hard, really. It certainly has its difficulties. But really it's just that it constantly undoes your progress. As you descend further down the levels, you face enemies that constantly do these insta-kills or level drains. Right now, three of my party have been drained of 4 total levels and I have to grind to get the 30,000 gold I'll need to restore them, which requires going back down to the lower levels to face more insta-kill/level drain enemies. This has been my experience with everything about this game; oh, were you trying to save up money to identify some magic items? Let's insta-kill your party members 6 or 7 times in a row and drain every penny. Oh, were you on the cusp of 13th level and almost ready to face Werdna? Let's drain you of multiple levels and, of course, you have no money for restoration since you spent it all resurrecting dead party members.
It's not really very much fun, tbh.
This is the biggest gap between original and remake I've seen. I know there's been ports and stuff, but still, a 2023 remake of a 1981 game is wild. It's pretty fun so far too
