DNF. The massive pop-in and image crunching from dynamic resolution on Switch wasn’t great.

Please for the love of God, remember to manually save. The first time I went through the game, I collected everything and had manually saved only once. I booted up that save post game....and all my progress fell into the void.

Remember when this game came out and it was awesome, because I sure do. Good times!

The soundtrack to this game (cyber levels and boss tracks specifically) is the only thing staving off the SAD right now!

Good game! Wasn't expecting this from the trailers earlier this year but I had a solid time with it. Looking forward to the next game.

Can't shake the feeling that this whole open world was designed for an entirely different game. I figure the original game was canceled and some Deputy Bean Counter at Sega thought that placing rails, rings, bumpers, and boost pads throughout would make it a perfect map for Sonic. It's so bizarre. The landscape is pretty enough (a la unity demo assets) but the top of every pile of rocks, for example, are jagged and not conducive in the least to Sonic's movement. The large ones have sonic-friendly installations for traversal, but then these little koroks kocos are all standing on small awkward rocks demanding small awkward jumps as if intentionally highlighting the mismatched environment.

Anyway. I'm still having fun with it.

I’m at the second titan right now and I find it wild how a game where the base gameplay is such a complete blast can have bosses that are so horrifically tedious. It’s like they were made by two completely different teams.

Completion screen from Sonic Frontiers zone 1-2 showing all complete objectives with a completion time of 00:53.83

This S rank was insane compared to every other one so far, I was so relieved to finally see this screen. No idea if my route was intended, kinda felt like I was breaking the stage.

Well folks, I may have some things to clean up but my main journey in Sonic Frontiers is over and I must say it was a satisfying one. I'll save my full thoughts for a review, but I did really have a blast playing this game.

One thing I will talk about now is the ending. Spoiler warning for anyone who wants this to left a surprise, so come back once you've finished the game or read away if you don't care about spoilers.

Some may have already read there is an options true boss at the end of the game. This is somewhat true. There is a final extra boss fight on hard mode, but narratively I think the same outcome is achieved whether you fight this boss or not depending on your difficult mode. And for some, it might be better not to go up against the final boss because I'm not sure how it fits into the logic of the Sonic series. It's a bullet hell shmup that affords you three lives and is quite lengthy. Screwing up three times means starting back at the beginning and it's a tedious fight to get through simply because it's quite long and you'll probably really only mess up toward the end. I don't really understand how this makes sense as the final boss for a Sonic. While Sonic bosses sometimes incorporate bullet hell aspects, and I'm quite fond of this fact, this fight felt a bit out of left field. I enjoyed it, because I enjoy a good bullet hell challenge now and then but it did leave me a bit puzzled. It also reminded me a bit of the ending of Nier: Automata, minus the meta textual aspect. The thing I'm really curious is whether this will go over well with Sonic fans, or if it will put some off.

It does feel a bit like a rough draft of an idea that didn’t come together before the game had to ship, but given how cookie cutter so many games at this scale often feel because of how much they cost to make, I can’t help but guffaw, applaud, hope the team gets a second chance to build on this, and hopefully inspire other game companies to take some risk, too.

Amen.

Sigh, gating story and level progression behind an albeit cute pinball game that requires 5 million points to beat is a bit of head scratcher. For a game that essentially allows you to progress by doing anything you want and mixing up your in game activities, halting the game for something that has no real workaround is a bit odd to me. I appreciate the reference and it’s pretty fun but you’re also at the mercy of luck because you really can’t control whether or not your ball rolls down the side gutter and out of play and that no only nullifies any multiplier you have going, it also burns one of the three lives you’re allowed for the game. Come on Sega, at least give me the ability to tilt and save my ball when I’m on a streak. I had a 256 multiplier on my first attempt and the ball just dropped off to the side, killing that multiplier seconds after I got it.. Anyway overall it’s not a huge annoyance but I bet there’s a few people out there that will hit this and just not be able to mechanically overcome it, and that’s unfortunate.

I adore this game but every 1 out of 50 challenges suffers from some sort of failing, be it a wonky camera, frustrating auto targeting or something misfiring. It doesn’t happen often enough to ruin the game but it can get annoying when it’s during moments closely tied with progression. There’s one story mission of the third island that has …

I adore this game but every 1 out of 50 challenges suffers from some sort of failing, be it a wonky camera, frustrating auto targeting or something misfiring. It doesn’t happen often enough to ruin the game but it can get annoying when it’s during moments closely tied with progression. There’s one story mission of the third island that has a series problem with how the game auto targets bumpers and enemies and the margin for error is razor thin leading to a lot of repeat tries.
