After GoldenEye it was always gonna be hard for any developer to follow that up. I remember a lot of people owning this game but also getting stuck early. It has a Syphon Filter look and feel to it and just like the movie it’s based on it has Bond (you) globetrotting across missions seen through a classic action platforming lens - complete with clever gadgets, deadly weapons, fast cars and even skiing.

It follows the film very closely and its 10 levels are connected through lengthy cutscenes. The music is actually pretty good and atmospheric; an accompaniment to some of the cooler looking levels like the snowy Russian borders or the rainy rooftops of Saigon. Movement and aiming feels a bit clunky and outdated with poorly aged visuals and mostly muddy, monochrome surroundings that soon has you longing for some Facility or Surface instead.

Good
This review is for the PlayStation version

I bought this in the 90's because I loved Goldeneye so much and revisited it in 2026. This is not Goldeneye. It's not a bad game, though. I'm not sure the gameplay is improved at all by switching from 1st person (Goldeneye) to 3rd person for this game. Honestly, it just made the character pretty unweildy and I ended up getting stuck in corners and at doorways a lot. Turning around was always a hassle. The early levels required some calibrating and lots of frustration with the controls, but by the end of the game I felt like I had found a balance and it wasn't as bothersome. I didn't like the skiing portions (of which there were two, I think) because the shove attack didn't seem to do anything and I kept getting surrounded and beaten up by the skiing thugs that were after me. The best option was just to try to out-run them. There were a few fun secret rooms with cool rewards like extra lives or weapons, there was a bit of stealth that was fun. They had Pierce Brosnan doing voice acting, which was cool, too. Overall, a fun PS1 game that Bond fans will …

Mediocre third-person shooter with tank controls. Suffers from limitations of PSX such as short draw-distance, pop-ups etc.
