Pretty impressive. Look, Sound, Feel is a consistent, dark and eerie tone. Most of the game is basically a nightmare. Levels and narrative can 'shift' between segments much like a dream would. The camera device is cool and works well for puzzles (the idea is you look through the viewfinder ||and change the structure of the dream in a 'lucid' way||) Most of the puzzles are basic as can be item gates (not obtuse though! I found them highly intuitive and logical, which is a bit odd to come from a 'puzzle game that takes place within a dream' :D)
I had hoped the game would have explored the idea of lucid dreaming in a more literal way, like it describes itself to do. It doesn't really do that. It's just a short, dreamy game that explores bereavement. Check it out if you like stuff like Yume Nikki
What a great couple weeks for horror - first Fear the Spotlight and now this!
Afterdream is a psychological horror puzzle game - it is structured similar to a point and click but is technically a sidescroller. It features perfectly designed puzzles and inventory interactions, with an ideal level of difficulty and head scratching.
The story is very dreamlike and interesting. The art style blew me away - it’s very unique, beautiful and grotesque. The environments, horror elements, and characters are perfectly designed.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the dev’s previous Distraint series, but now I want to go back and try them again. This one nailed the vision - great gameplay and great atmosphere. I super recommend it!
Another solid entry from Jesse Makkonen. As with his previous games, the visuals have a unique and appealing style, and the music is quite good, working together to create an excellent dreamlike moodiness. It's hard to overstate how much I enjoyed the atmosphere. The puzzles were straightforward, but still felt satisfying, and the camera mechanic was simple but impactful. The plot feels a bit thin here, and while there's a lot of heart to it, I didn't quite get as emotionally invested as I'd hoped. I think there needed to be a bit more screentime for the major characters to really get me invested for the finale. Still, I had a good time with Afterdream and easily recommend it to fans of horror adventure games.
