I always sucked at After Burner and getting back on it today I can see nothing changed. To be fair, it's clearly made for sucking money ot ouf your pockets: chaotic, iper-hectic, really hard and it lets you add coins to get more lives, so you don't even have to see the Game Over screen. That's also why it's such a pleasure to emulate it and enjoy it without having to spend your whole weekly allowance. Also, I was able to play it with my HOTAS, which mad it really cool and kinda close to my memories of playing it in the arcades. I'm also sitting on a Varier, so I could move up and down and feel like I was on a cheap version of the old hydraulics powered arcade machine. :D
Anyway, it's still visually really pretty, the Eighties music is adorable and it's a fun game, even though I think After Burner II is a better game. It's not that different, but the graphics are marginally better, there's some cute new ideas and the speed control is actually a smart addition in terms of gameplay. Also, it allowed me to use my full HOTAS setup, the throttle …

Anyway, these are really simple, spectacular, chaotic and ultimately fun games. Ah, the old times! Ah, I'm old! ah
Beat on NES using slow motion. This was not a 3D flight simulator, rather more of an on rails shooter. I found the visuals from moving the jet around to be very choppy and an eye sore, especially when shooting enemies that flew past from behind. The main gameplay was lining up missile locks on tiny specs in the distance to destroy enemies before they shot missiles. There was seemingly no limit on how many targets could be locked and the missiles were smart enough to go after different targets. It was very simple gameplay that only changed a bit with different enemy formations and faster speed as stages went on. Sometimes there were missiles coming from behind that required a barrel roll to shake. Missiles coming from the front were a bit more challenging as you had to bank the correct way or sometimes barrel roll. I had to save state scum quite a bit to avoid some of those deaths. Speeding up could also help avoid missiles. The most annoying part was the barrel roll controls. Rather than be a dedicated button it was performed by a combination of left and right movement, which led to a lot …

Rather than be a dedicated button it was performed by a combination of left and right movement, which led to a lot of unintentional rolls and failure to execute some when I wanted to. It was not a long game but was starting to get boring around the half way point. It was not as well made as it could have been but decent fun for a NES game.
