I sorta figured that the Wylder's grappling hook would function just like the one in Sekiro, but it turns out it's even better! Quickly rocketing sideways to dodge big attacks is rad, and doubling your travel distance with a well-timed jump halfway through the grapple feels really expressive.

Finally taking the plunge on Nightreign, and I simply have zero idea what I'm doing lol. Hopefully my other Souls experience will keep me from dragging down my whole team.

Nightreign is at its best when I’m at my best, which means From Software’s take on the roguelite genre needs to meet me halfway, leaving its frustrating misgivings at the roundtable hold. When the matchmaking works, when the map randomness gives my trio a fighting chance, and when the storm doesn’t punishingly throw an unfair wrench into the expedition, I’m excited to rise to the challenge. The reward for my efforts is the mastery, knowledge, and adrenaline I spent dozens of hours building in Elden Ring, condensed into a single run. And every success is as visceral and glorious as the last.

It has been fun. Need to start doing the character specific quest stuff because apparently that's where you get the best relics.

A great co-op Elden Ring experience that I enjoyed with both friends and randoms alike.
I am not huge on souls games in general, but Elden Ring had the appeal that made me a fan. Even more so when I could play with friends, so this went on my radar rather quick.

It's a very strange game all in all, with a lot of industry standard ideas mish-mashed into each other, but with an Elden Ring wrap around them. I am sure there are many other games that follow a similar system, but I was immediately reminded of Ravenswatch (a great co-operative game for those who want a similar experience to this but isometric).
I won't go too deep into my experience but each boss was something fresh to fight, especially with the array of characters you can choose from to suit your playstyle (or force into your playstyle if you wish!). Very much a blast with friends, even sometimes with randoms.
I have not yet done the harder versions of the bosses, but I think I am okay with that and will let the initial play through be my only one unless a new boss is revealed. Looking forward to more if it comes!

Everyone was complaining about the Everdark Maris fight, saying it's dull and long and samey. But I always liked the standard Maris fight a lot, she's in my upper half of the best bosses. If you're unaware, an 8.8 magnitude earthquake – one of the strongest ever recorded – hit the Kamchatka Peninsula in Eastern Russia yesterday (local US time). This has resulted in tsunami warnings for territories such as Russia, Japan, Hawaii, and the US West Coast, which have forced evacuations in several affected areas.

Wow. Nightreign has been an absolute blast. The RNG of playing with randoms and the lack of communication made things tough at times. Trying to kill the Night Aspect boss with all 8 characters wasn't easy — people dropping out, skill gaps, etc.
But even with all that, the gameplay, the design, the pull — it’s enough for me to call this my GOTY. In fact, it might be the only game I’ll ever 100%. I’m not an achievement hunter, but Nightreign is compact. It’s not long or deep in the traditional sense — more like a bold test run. Think Bowser’s Fury: a focused, experimental expansion that feels like a preview of something bigger. And just like that game, Nightreign is packed with ideas, mechanics, and risks that work.
If modern gaming feels stale to some (not necessarily to me), games like Nightreign offer hope. Hope for smaller, weirder, more creative projects.
Because honestly, we’ve been playing variations of the same formula for too long. Gameplay in cinematic AAA titles or platformers hasn’t changed all that much. Compare Astro Bot with Super Mario Sunshine, or Shadow of Mordor with any Assassin’s Creed or Ghost of Tsushima — you’ll see what I mean.
Nightreign isn’t perfect, but it pushes new mechanics and fresh design choices. And that, to me, is very, very exciting.

I probably should have just trusted my reaction though since this really does not seem like it’s for me after my first couple sessions. There’s definitely a learning curve that I’m far from being over, which I’m sure would eventually lead to a more engaging and strategic experience, but my initial impressions playing solo as different characters without making it out of Day 1 yet are surprisingly just kind of boring. It’s hard to feel properly prepared for bosses, so it’s a lot of just fighting basic enemies and running between the map’s points of interest. Some roguelikes like Risk of Rain 2 and Hades did have a learning curve but were just instantly really fun, and when I died late in a run I felt less like I was grinding back through less fun stuff to try again and more like I was just still having continuous fun. This feels more like how I felt playing Returnal, which frustrated and ultimately bored me after many failed attempts. The core combat is still good here, but the context it’s been transposed to really seems to drain a lot of Elden Ring’s appeal for me. I haven’t played a ton, so I can’t really evaluate it properly, but this doesn’t really make me excited to keep playing so far.

I like the truncated nature of jumping on and playing one or two runs. The amount of characterization for the cast surprises me, Fromsoft always has good writing whenever it chooses to engage with it. It's not quite up to the level of Armored Core VI for me but it's definitely a fun little game that will keep me coming back for a long time. I plan to quit playing after I finish all the character questlines, and wait for the dlc or patches to add more content so I don't get overdone with it before then. Really surprised that the Gaurdian has slowly become my main, as he was probably 2nd to last of the characters I had any interest in initially. Wylder is the most pure fun to play. Still haven't gotten around to trying out Revenant all that much but I adore her design and her cute little edgelord attitude.

I've been going through the character Rememberance quests which pretty much require solo play unless you can get a group together specifically for it. I'd figured from Fromsofts messaging that solo was really not particularly viable but it's actually not that bad and is fun in a very different way from group play. Mostly I just focus on completing the character objective and then go until I lose. But I did actually manage to complete a full solo run with Ironeye last night.
