This story is still working overtime to convince me that Lara is essentially a monster, while simultaneously trying to absolve her of every monstrous act. I don’t know if the devs were trying to engage in critical reflection of Lara’s role as a cultural thief and all around murderer, but they seem conflicted in the task as if they want to have space to critique while desperately trying to make sure the player still likes Lara and is sufficiently coddled so that they don’t think too deeply about the pleasures derived from the game’s awful aspects.

Why do I have gear with various perks if for a huge chunk of the game I have to wear one or two specific outfits to advance the story, and when I do I'm not provided a campsite at which to change my gear? Furthermore, only having the option to change gear at a campsite is a fairly annoying imposed limitation.

Also, why is this game so damn dark? I had to dial the brightness up both in-game and on my TV, both of which are things I never have to do.

I absolutely loath this story and I think this game rivals Horizon Forbidden West for worst representation of indigeneity in a game that I've played this year. I'm finding it really hard to continue with this game.

Does it bother anyone else that this is supposed to take place in Peru but none of the voice actors sound peruano?

Games like this are why I wish indigenous groups had more opportunity and funding to make their own stories into games so that there is something to counterbalance the “mystical native” narratives repeatedly told by non-indigenous studios.

It’s interesting to note that we are now nearly a decade since the reboot of this series, and a lot of what felt fresh in 2013 feels quite dated and tedious now. It’s interesting to note that we are now nearly a decade since the reboot of this series, and a lot of what felt fresh in 2013 feels quite dated and tedious now. Eidos’ take on the Uncharted formula is getting long in the tooth. The abundance of QTE, cut scenes used to bridge locations and hide load times, long scripted escape and climbing sequences, overtly graphic death sequences and mediocre third-person combat all truly feel like they belong in another era. I think this series needs a reboot once again to freshen it up. Maybe also make Lara an artefact thief who raids museums instead of tombs and repatriates lost goods to their home countries. No more orientalized locales, just good old western museums full to the brim of stolen items. Her catchphrase could be “this doesn’t belong in a museum”. A modern day Lara Croft meets Carmen Santiago.

Wait, no, I think I just want a Carmen Santiago title, with all the mechanics of a Tomb Raider game, perhaps with stealth instead of lethal takedowns. Yeah, devs of the world, get on that. Give me an action Carmen Santiago game where I steal shit and give it back to the owners. Maybe incorporate some world trivia instead of some of the mechanical puzzles. Make it so people.

Woof this game is doing some heavy lifting to try to convince me that Lara is still somehow in the right and not the actual villain of this story.

And she feels so bad about all the people dying. Or maybe she just feels bad that Jonah is upset with her. Poor Lara 🫤

Three early observations:

  1. Lara is now John Rambo
  2. The game justifies stealing from colonized cultures by implying the antagonists will just steal it anyway so Lara might as well to thwart their evil plans. Oh and the antagonist is South American, but since it’s early and I don’t know the relevant plot points I can only guess he’s peruano and …

  3. Apparently puzzles are now solved for the player via cutscene. Joy.

I just noticed the difference in the number of "users who have this in their collection" between the three games after the reboot. Its pretty significant, and clearly not totally explained by the difference in release dates.

  • Tomb Raider: 17,000 users, released on 2013
  • Rise of the Tomb Raider: 7,000 users, released on 2015
  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider: 4,000 …

  • Me: "Wow, they really fixed those shitty scripted platforming scenes from the last two games."

  • The game, literally within seconds: "Here, how about you die a couple of times while trying to figure out why Lara won't swing on that pole."

For fucks sake.

After some months sitting in my back log, it's finally time to play it. It was a PS+ free game. Does anyone now if the DLC is worth buying? There is now a sale for the Definitive Edition that is cheaper than the actual DLC from the game.

The loading time is so long that it makes me bored before starting playing. I am really looking into the next generation consoles ; I hope they will be able to improve this.
