Arkanoid is an arcade game developed by Taito in 1986. It expanded upon Atari's Breakout games of the 1970s by adding power-ups, different types of bricks, and a variety of level layouts. The title refers to a doomed "mothership" from which the player's ship, the Vaus, escapes.

The best of the classic brick breaker games, as far as I'm aware. The best of the classic brick breaker games, as far as I'm aware. I think a lot of people might think of this one, when they think of the genre, though this released in 1986, well after Clean Sweep and Breakout (74 and 76). What makes this one interesting are all the power-ups. Sometimes you get multiple balls to bounce about the stage, sometimes the ball will stick to your paddle (allowing you to aim your next volley), and sometimes you even get the ability to shoot at the bricks. Definitely makes things more exciting. The levels also change the layout of all the bricks, giving some variety that way too.

The best way to play this is with the dial knob you twist at an arcade machine. I love how it feels -- the weight of it, its sturdy metal build, that heft. Way better than just moving left and right with a controller joystick.

Break out the Arkanoid

I don't know what an Arkanoid is, but it sounds good. We've all played Breakout or some kind of ripoff/homage at some point and I remember a lot of the early flash games on the internet was Breakout or Arkanoid-esque. My dad loved this game and played it on both our NES and GameBoy a lot, and he was way better than us anyway, so we didn't mind watching him progress and ultimately lose his mind. Oh how we carried that torch.

The gameplay is easy to pick up and it's addicting to say the least. You just wanna make it one more level to see what it looks like, and damn it if you're not gonna hold the family high score with pride. It gets hectic when you have to decide if you're gonna save the ball - or go for that power-up that's gonna help you. Sometimes you get completely joinked and crossed over by the game and you feel violated. It's great. I have always played Arkanoid and I probably always will.
