I have exactly ONE RGG game left on my backlog - Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise. I'm gonna give that one a fair shake, because at very least, it's a totally different world, art style and works with a different set of themes.

Having played A LOT of RGG games in the last 5 years or so, I think I just straight have series fatigue. The bugbears have become nuisances, and I definitely think this series suffers HARD from quantity over quality.

If I have to rank the ones I've played...

  1. Yakuza: Like A Dragon
  2. Yakuza Kiwami
  3. Yakuza Zero
  4. Lost Judgment
  5. Infinite Wealth
  6. Yakuza Kiwami 2
  7. Judgment

I don't give a single damn about this random side character from the first game giving me a pointless fetch quest.

Do people like the side stories? Great. Happy for them. Leave it as strictly optional content. Don't completely derail the momentum of the story for this low-effort "comedy" content. I think this is like the 5th or 6th RGG game I've played, and they all do this. 😭

I wouldn't with the motorcycle club on my worst enemy. This school story is LOOOOOOOOOONG! And insanely hard towards the end with its rubberbanding BS. Horrible. Switched from Hard to Simple because the last race sucks and won. I like the story of it though.

It's so peak. The combat is peak. The soundtrack is peak. The side content is peak. The villains are peak. This game is so peak. Deadass the best Yakuza game I have played. I'm not done with peak. I love it. Raw. Goated. Kino. Swag.

Every beat-em-up game RGG makes should play as well as Lost Judgment from here on out. I feel spoiled already.

This is just as good as the first one with some improvements. I think the detective gameplay outside of the combat still isn't great though. Tailing, parkour, and photography are simple enough to not be frustrating, but they aren't fun to do either. I hope they figure out a way to make something interesting with future installments that make me feel like a detective, but doesn't come with some hard fail states. Right now, it's just fine. Tailing has been improved from the previous game to make it less frustrating at least. Combat-wise, they add a new fighting style that is really useful. It might even be a little OP. It was created for fighting enemies with weapons as it has moves for disarming them, but it was a good go-to style in any situation as I could easily deflect enemy attacks creating an opening to get in some free hits.

The story is so good here. It's the exact type of crime-thriller stories I enjoy in movies and TV. A man is found guilty of groping a woman on a train, and after his sentencing, he announces to the court the location of the corpse of a man that bullied his son until his son committed suicide. The thing is, the time of death of this corpse is when the groper was harassing a woman on the train. How would the groper know about this corpse, and is it possible that he could've killed this man. As the groper was represented by Takayuki Yagami's old law firm, he helps in discovering the truth behind both the murder and groping crimes. The story gets into school bullying, vigilantism, and the flaws of the criminal justice system. It handles all of this really well.

The other part of this game is the School Stories. In this part, Yagami helps young, aspiring detective Amasawa to learn the identity of The Professor, a mysterious figure behind the corrupt activities in and around Seiryo High School. Yagami investigates different clubs and rumors to solve this mystery which involves playing several different minigames. This part of the game is great too, and it's almost as long as the main game. There are some impressive minigames here and they are all very different from each other. The standout is the boxing minigame that is surprisingly deep and fun.

Tällä kertaa esimerkiksi taistelusysteemi on erittäin nautinnollinen.

Taistelutyylin lisäksi sivusisällön määrä on ihan tajuton verrattuna ensimmäiseen Judgmenttiin.

Lost Judgment on monilta osin paras Dragon Engine -peli, jota on tähän mennessä tehty.

I enjoyed playing Lost Judgment, but I'm conflicted about it in comparison to other recent entries in the Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio oeuvre.

Let's start with what I liked:

  • It was great to revisit the main setting of Like a Dragon, but with better options for traversal aside from taxis. It also felt like points of interest were better allocated.
  • Although the different fighting styles felt a little indistinct to me at first, over time they grew into my favorite set of beat-em-up skills since Yakuza 0.
  • Most of the minigames this time around were really top-notch. I spent the majority of my time playing through the game's "school stories," which I found varied, eclectic and fun.
  • Plenty of animal friends in this one!

Most of what I didn't like was short-lived (stealth sections) or easily ignored, with one big exception: The main story.

I don't need a Yakuza game's story to be amazing. I find their usual melodrama charming, and the twists are fun even when I spot them a mile away. But the way Lost Judgment puts the (very real and very serious) problem of bullying up on a pedestal while hand-waving sexual assault and even murder comes across as extremely tone-deaf. I think it's trying to present a story about "gray areas" (a staple of the series), but I didn't buy the redemption arcs it tried to sell me this time around. Overall, it was kind of a bummer, and I delayed returning to it as long as I could.

All that said, I can't give the game a bad review: I spent most of it fighting and playing side quests, and those aspects are great! I just think this one overestimated its ability to tackle certain subjects without significant amounts of cringe along the way.

And they finally have given us an awesome beat' em up system in Dragon Engine. I like it a lot. Plus the soundtrack is again great but with RGG Studio's games that's hardly newsworthy.

Gonna hopefully get this on Friday. The first Judgment was brilliant. It felt a bit like a smaller spin-off in its scale but the upgraded Dragon Engine combat system and especially the story made it one of my favourite Yakuza games. The detective and lawyer elements were pretty barebones but that didn't really detract a lot from the experience. It was just so refreshing to see a Yakuza game with a completely new backstory. It was finally a game where the suspense held up and the story didn't fall on its face by pulling up stupid twists and tropes (like doppelgangers, rubber bullets, secret twin brothers at CIA, last-minute villains). It has the best story out of Yakuza games in my opinion, followed by Yakuza Zero.

Lost Judgment seems to up the scale A LOT by offering tons of stuff and refining on the combat even more. Even the detective and lawyer stuff seems to have had some additions but if they still end up underdeveloped, I'm not gonna care too much. My main concern is the story. I hope they nail it again. Supposedly it will be a bit more "human" once again so I have my hopes.
