A fantastic single screen shooter that has you going through waves of invaders at incredible speed, with with plenty of new enemies, including tricky invaders that try to reflect your shots, several bosses, and giant invaders with massive laser beams. With psychedelic backgrounds, heavy techno, and hyper pacing it's great just shooting things down but where it really shines is the scoring system.

Killing consecutive enemies of the same color/shape cause them to drop power-ups like a deadly, piercing shot that lets you potentially obliterate an entire wave in a single sweeping action or an explosive shot that can take out half a dozen invaders with one blast. Power ups only have a short duration so you'll than use your new added killing power to set up another chain to keep the combo going, potentially going multiple waves without dropping back down to the basic shot. This adds a puzzling element to each enemy wave as you need to make snap-judgements about what type of chain you are going to pull off, and thus what power up you'll be using to tackle the wave. The system is highly addictive and intricate.

There's additional scoring intricacies like shooting down fast-moving UFOs which can send you into bonus levels, which if cleared send you back into the main mode with a 'fever mode' where the background goes into a rainbow of chaos, fire power up goes up even more and scoring value is even further increased allowing you to increase your firing speed if you meet scoring benchmarks. All of this keeps it hectic and engaging.

The main game can be 1 credited pretty quickly by any decent player with score-chasing and a few alternative routes in the campaign being the only extras. It would probably be challenging to someone who doesn't play many shooting games

Jeez this game is wild. Very fast paced and constant bombardment of particle effects and sounds. It's almost seizure inducing

I throwing in the towel on Space Invaders Extreme. It's a cool game and can be fun, but it's overly challenging in my opinion, and in a way that isn't fun for me. I'm done with shooting those ships that then immediately fly down to the bottom of the screen and kill you.
