A Fun TMNT Beat 'em Up

This game hearkens back to the TMNT games I grew up playing on the NES, while adding more characters, moves, and modes. That's about all there is to say about it. There is not a lot of depth to it, but beating up Foot Soldiers as your favorite TMNT character is inherently fun, whether solo or in multiplayer.

beware

don't make the same mistake I did, I played this single-player, and in mobile because it was free on Netflix, but it's the type of game that is better enjoyed with a controller, and with a friend, I honestly should have gone about playing the game differently

A-luokan retromättöä

Lyhyesti sanottuna TMNT: Shredder's Revenge on mainio beat' em' up -peli.

The only thing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge is missing is the option to play it in 1991 with my best friends on a coin-op in the bar inside a subway station.

Absolutely love this game. Great art style, love the TMNT. Just a great hack and slash. The difficulty is a little bit off as the farther in the game you got the easier it was. The final boss was a little underwhelming.

Nostalgia for those that want it

I played the TMNT back in the day and was looking forward to this. Unfortunately it wasn't a very fun game even when played with friends.

It is a mindless button smasher. The graphics are pretty, the music is great, but doesn't really bring much to the table.

There might some fun to be found with some beers though.

This was a short, but radically fun and gnarly return to one of my favorite beat em' up franchises as a kid. TMNT 3 on the NES was my favorite game growing up. I never owned a SNES, but whenever I went to my friends house I insisted on playing Turtles in Time, which was an objective improvement to TMNT 3.

The devs clearly had a ton of love for the original games which is reflected in the art style, music and bosses (some who were taken directly from previous games). The pixel art still-frames are awesome. The plot has nothing to say beyond, beat up all the bad guys. But let's be honest, you didn't buy this game for the plot. You bought it for the co-op and it delivers.

This game is significantly more fair than the original games. I found myself rarely dying once I got used to the controls. They do enough with each character to make them play differently. Even April is surprisingly fun to play with her high mobility. Though my biggest issue with the game is how taunting works. It's a fun concept and reminiscent of the original Devil May Cry, the issue with it is how it charges an entire bar of your special meter. This results in the optimal game play to be spamming taunt and special attacks. To be fair, you don't have to play optimally, but when optimal play is both challenging and fun I believe game play hits a peak. Sadly taunt spamming is neither of those things and it makes game play feel ultimately hollow. Side note, Splinters dash special is insanely broken. You basically shoot a Kamehameha wave.

There's inconsistent difficulty curves throughout the game. Some bosses later on are just plain easier than earlier bosses. The Leatherhead boss fight comes to mind as trivial. The last two bosses in the game I found to be the best boss encounters because they introduce actual mechanics that make taunt and special spamming harder due to boss mobility and large AOE attacks you need to dodge.

Still, it's a fun return down memory lane if you have some friends to game with.

Playing a new TMNT beat-em-up in 2022 is a nice two-for-one nostalgia bomb of old-school arcadey gameplay and a classic childhood franchise. This game’s straightforwardness, short length, and colorful cartoon antics make it a pretty easy one to get into and enjoy. Though it’s not anything amazing, it is a solid pickup for Game Pass and a pretty fun chill co-op game.

The game theoretically has decent replayability thanks to a variety of hidden collectibles, 7 playable characters, and some hard challenges to knock out for each stage. I don’t really think this is a fun or remarkable enough game to make me want to do all that, but it’s nice that it’s there for those who are bigger fans of this gameplay or who want to get more out of the purchase.

Either way, it does work well as a one-and-done experience thanks to its fast-paced action, decent variety of enemies and backdrops, and colorful retro-style look. The solid range of moves you can do in combat helps keeps things stylish and exciting. I think this kind of game could be taken to the next level with more dynamic levels that do a bit more than just point A to point B, but it’s that simplicity that makes this work, so I think it’s fine as-is as a well-made 7/10 type game.

Nostalgian nälkään mahtavaa mätkettä

Megadriven Hyperstone Heist kuului lapsuuden yksiin lempparipeleihin. Siksi olikin ilmiselvää, että uusi Beat em up Turtles nosti nostalgiannälkäisen mielenkiinnon. Peli onnistuukin kaappaamaan juuri noiden 16 bittisten Turtles pelien fiiliksen, sekä toiminnallaan, grafiikallaan että musiikillaan. Kuitenkin peliin on tuotu mukavasti lisämaustetta mm. erikoisiskujen ja väistöliikkeiden muodossa. Myöskin pelattavia hahmoja on peruskilpparinelikon lisäksi useampi. Peli onnistuukin kaappaamaan juuri noiden 16 bittisten Turtles pelien fiiliksen, sekä toiminnallaan, grafiikallaan että musiikillaan. Kuitenkin peliin on tuotu mukavasti lisämaustetta mm. erikoisiskujen ja väistöliikkeiden muodossa. Myöskin pelattavia hahmoja on peruskilpparinelikon lisäksi useampi.

Consigliato Voto: 8.5/10
