"Q" Game Completed
#ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ

So here's a fun one - I played this emulated in a fantastic PS2 compilation called Capcom Classics Collection Vol 2 (remember when publishers actually released compilations with dozens of games for a reasonable price like this????), which, itself, was emulated on Series X. Layers on layers of emulation. This collection actually has two distinct versions of Quiz & Dragons, and it's absolutely worth picking up for the variant exclusive to this compilation.

Quiz & Dragons is a really cool trivia game paired with light RPG themes and elements to deliver a really cool experience. There are four playable characters - each with a different perk (doled at random). One will occasionally erase a false answer, for instance. You roll a dice and move along a board, with most spaces being various fantasy monsters - werewolves, zombies, slimes, etc. Each enemy encounter has a health bar, and answering a trivia question correctly will take away 1 HP. Getting one wrong loses you 1 HP.

The board also has Inns - which restore HP if you answer their question correctly - and Elves, who hand out helpful items to use in your next battle.

Quiz & Dragons' largest flaw, by far, is the questions that rely on very outdated sports and pop culture trivia. I'd say about half the questions are pretty evergreen; history, science, etc. But when a question comes at you asking, "What team did this NFL guy coach before moving to the Cleveland Browns?" it's a bit obtuse. Fam, I wouldn't even know that answer for MODERN football. Same goes for a number of questions regarding media from the 70s and 80s that isn't remembered today... Like really specific questions about shows like Chips, for instance.

But that second variant of Q&D is what elevates it from 3 stars to 4 stars for me. There's a hidden, modified version of this ROM included in the game's "Extras" menu that features exclusively Capcom trivia. And it's remarkably comprehensive - it features everything from 80s Capcom arcade titles to, at that time, modern games like Killer7, Resident Evil 4 and Lost Planet. I fared really well with the Resident Evil and Mega Man questions, but was completely clueless on the Monster Hunter and Puzzle Fighter stuff.

Revisiting Capcom's history through these trivia questions was a lot of fun. This was during a time when Capcom actually had pride in its franchises like Mega Man, and Viewtiful Joe, and Maximo. Everything is represented, so far as I could tell - Pirate Ship Higemaru, Forgotten Worlds, Captain Commando, just this massive range of Capcom classics represented in the trivia.

I'd love to see another Capcom compilation with a modern take on this quiz. It's such a wonderful love letter to their history, using one of their own games to deliver it. It's brilliant stuff, and I really loved the 90ish minutes it took to complete the game.
