This game is a standout 2D stealth game that blends fluid controls, clever level design, and a striking visual style. It distinguishes itself with a unique system that visualizes sound and light, making stealth mechanics clear and intuitive without breaking immersion. The levels offer multiple approaches, whether you prefer ghost-like infiltration or creative use of traps and distractions, and the responsive controls make movement and combat feel precise and satisfying.

Its hand-drawn art style, dynamic lighting, and smooth animation create an atmospheric world that feels both tense and stylish. While the story of a tattooed ninja avenging his clan is serviceable and presented through comic-style cutscenes, it mainly serves as a backdrop for the gameplay. Replayability is high thanks to optional objectives, hidden collectibles, and a challenging New Game Plus mode. Overall, it’s a masterclass in stealth design that makes you truly feel like a ninja, one of the best, and most unique, stealth platformer titles I've ever played.

Beyond its core mechanics, it excels in how it teaches and reinforces mastery. Enemy AI is predictable enough to be readable but flexible enough to punish carelessness, encouraging patience and planning over brute force. The upgrade system subtly nudges different playstyles, letting you tailor abilities toward speed, lethality, or pure stealth, and the game smartly tracks your behavior to score missions accordingly. This feedback loop makes experimentation rewarding and failure a learning tool rather than a frustration.

Sound design deserves special praise, every footstep, shattered light, or muffled takedown reinforces spatial awareness and tension, making silence feel as important as movement. Even years after release, this title remains timeless, not because it chases realism, but because it fully commits to clarity, elegance, and player agency, qualities that many stealth games still struggle to achieve.

I stumbled into this game during my eternal, unfinished conquest to relive the serotonin release the Tenchu games gave me in the PS2 era, and it is not it, of course, but it is a very good game.

I was in awe by the ability to pull off satisfying stealth mechanics in a 2D environment. It was surprisingly entertaining considering that you don't have the same range of movement and possibilities. The features and the controls are great.

I think the thin part of the game is the story and lore. I don't know, cyberpunky ninja stuff is not my thing (probably need to try the Ninja Gaidens and Metal Gear Rising to see), so I didn't connect with the story very well. Actually even though I played only like five years ago I am unable to recall anything from it, only that the villain is named after my favorite classical conductor.

I may want to replay it some time. Already completed the Steam achievements and if I am not mistaken the main campaign is like twenty hours tops. Maybe the remastered version improves my opinion of it.

Incredible gameplay, decent art, boring story

Update: 8/30/23

On replay, I was surprised how repetitive the game actually is. The levels really get bland, and the game doesn't switch up things enough throughout. It's fun for the first playthrough but there's not really much replayability, which surprised me. Updating to a 2/5.

I could barely pay attention to the cutscenes. And I know the animation is well praised, and it is technically talented, but I really didn't love the art style.

But its sooooo fun to play, every level adds new mechanics and its so well paced.

Play it for the mechanics not the story

I enjoyed this game as a decent stealth platformer. To me, 2d side-scrolling seems like a tough fit off a stealth game but Klei make it work with a small suspension of disbelief. The important thing is that the mechanics work, it’s challenging yet fun. It helps that checkpoints are well-spaced so you never have to slog through long stretches after dying. Overall, I felt there was good balance between the increasing difficulty and the newly gained powers. The story isn’t as strong but then most people aren’t playing it for that reason. Without spoiling anything, the ending is odd. Not bad, necessarily, but you don’t really get much explanation. There is enough there to keep you drawn in, however, if you enjoy the gameplay.

Nice Surprise

This was GREAT. I'd read about it on some 'most underrated Switch games' list ages ago and added to my wishlist. Saw it was on sale for like 4 quid and decided to pick it up. I was genuinely not expecting it to be as good as it was - for what it is it is nigh on flawless. Looks …

enter image description here

enter image description here

Tl;dr: This is a great game, probably the only one that really makes you feel like a Ninja (maybe Tenchu too?). It has a focus on mechanics and play systems that is great for people that loves getting high scores but the plot, character development and lore are not that good and even the plot twist feel irrelevant. It also looks great. The cartoon style makes the characters shine (the stages, not so much).

After sitting in my backlog for more than five years, I've finally decided to play this. I've hearing about this one for a long time, some people even say it's "The best stealth game ever".

Let's see if it can live up to the hype.

Closing in on the end of Mark of the Ninja. Might be too soon to call it, but I think this is a nearly perfect game. I'm not generally a fan of stealth games. There's usually several ways to approach a scenario, and the checkpoints are very forgiving.

The best (only?) 2D stealth game I have ever played! Mechanically, it's probably the best stealth game I have ever played. The story isn't anything special, but it's a fun game. Recommended!
